The winter months are now upon us and along with doing odds and ends race wise, I have been frequenting Warren Vincents "Racing From the Past" site and watchin my old 1984 NCRA champ dirt car videos from that season. But they are all on VHS.

My question is, if I buy one of those DVD/VHS recorders, would that be perfect to switch my tapes to DVD with the same quality? What brand would you choose and how much do they cost?

If and or when I do get the money to buy whatever it takes, I would be glad to make copies of what I do have at no charge for whoever wants them. However, as Brian26 and I have worked out, I would really enjoy trading a copy I make for one that one of you may have.

While it is not great quality by today's standards, if you know the drivers and cars you still know what your watching. Most are narriated by now USAC announcer Dr. Patrick Sullivan and does a really good job. Tony Bond (Mudslinger Video) can confirm this.

I have most of the 1984 NCRA champ car season, including the I-70 Speedway stop and the Knoxville Speedway Wednesday Night of the Nationals, including the Terry Guinn/Jack Moulton crash on the front stretch and the very scary Jerry Stone flip over the turn three fence.

I think I have most of the 1985 NCRA champ dirt car season as well and about half the 1986 champ car season. At the time I went through all the tapes that I had and made a "flip" tape from those and other sprint car race tapes that I do have. There are over 150 different races that I have on VHS tapes and my goal is to condense them into dates/years onto DVD.

Of course, most of you historians would be interested in the 1959 Taft Stadium tape along with the 1969 Muskogee/Tulsa Speedway video and 1972-73 MARCAR produced Fairgrounds Speedway documentary. I also have acquired the Harold Leep documentary video. All I would like transfered on DVD.

I am working to get ahold of old 1984-1986 weekly racing tapes from OKC as well as old NCRA late model vidoes from that era as well. If you have anything like that or anything pre-1984, I would love to trade with ya.

Any advice would be nice, thank you.

David.....check out DVD burners in Consumer Reports (yes, the library has back issues and the buying guide) and in Yahoo Shopping. There is a comparison function available in there somewhere that allows you to compare features vs price, along with buyer ratings and reviews. I'm kind of in the market myself, but I may hold out for Blue-Ray, since that seems to be the coming thing. Of course, there's always the ka-ching factor. C'mon, Powerball!!!!

I have everything you need to convert your VHS tapes to DVD.  I will loan it to you.

What you will need -
VHS player to play the VHS tapes in and a computer with a DVD Burner.
A lot of Hard Drive Space and a lot of spare time.

If you happen to make two copies of that flip tape you mentioned, I would love to have one to call my own. If you were into that. I would of course compensate you for your trouble and time and product within reason. lol

I bought a SV2000 4 head hi-fi stereo vcr/progressive scan Dolby Digital dvd recorder combo unit. 1 step VHS dubbing to DVD for $49. Purchased at Walmart. Works great for me.

ZV420SL8 FEATURES. Mine is a little older version of this one

I have the SV2000 dvd recorder as well. It works great for dvd burning. All you would need is your VCR and one of the RCA patch cords to hook up the audio and video, and one like you would need comes with the dvd burner. The SV2000 burns in real time... meaning you hook everything up, get the channel settings right (easy to do), put your tape in the vcr, put a blank DVD-R in the SV2000, push play on the tape and push "record" on the dvd burner and it burns as you watch the tape. At the end of the tape you push "stop" on the SV2000 and it finishes the burn. One thing to know though, is that the dvd that is burned will only play on the SV2000 unit until you "finalize" it, which is in the menu and is easy to do. Then the dvd will play on any dvd player. So you can burn with this rig very easily but it would take you some time. If you got a rig like this we could email or talk on the phone and I could talk you through the setup and all that. BigDog's computer rig would work like a charm too, if you choose to go that route.
