SANTOS WINS 68TH "TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX;" WHITT TAKES NATIONAL TITLE BY 1 POINT!
DECEMBER 1, 2008 --- Bobby Santos III of Franklin, Mass. and Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif. shared the spotlight Thursday night in the 68th "Turkey Night Grand Prix" USAC Mopar National/Western Midget race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Calif.
Santos won the 98-lap race, Whitt edged Tracy Hines by one point for the USAC Mopar National Midget title and Nic Faas of Huntington Beach, Calif. finished 13th, won the Don Basile "Rookie of the Year" award and the 2008 USAC Western Midget title.
Santos' victory also won the 2008 "Toyota Challenge" championship for his car owner Western Speed Racing of Fresno, Calif.
Hines barely missed joining Jerry Coons Jr. as a USAC Triple Crown Champion, Coons earned the honor earlier this month at Phoenix, Ariz.
Santos was the fifth and final leader of the race, passing Davey Hamilton on lap 90. Pole starter Bobby East led the first five laps, Chuck Gurney Jr. led the next three, Jason Leffler led for 48 laps and Hamilton led 33 before Santos made his winning move. Trailing Santos at the checkered flag were Hamilton, Darren Hagen, Ryan Kaplan and Leffler.
