One of the Southeast's premier racing pioneers lost his lengthy battle with cancer today (Nov 23). Skip Wetjen passed away in Mobile today. Skip was the first promoter after getting Mobile Intl Speedway built in 1965. He is best known as the kingpin at Speedway Inc - a 1960's supermodified circuit that produced some great drivers and action. Speedway Inc raced 4 to 5 nights a week and presented what amounted to a forerunner of the Florida Speedweeks. Such drivers as Armond Holley, Bill Roynon, Hooker Hood, Ellis Palasini, and Gene Tapia came out of the circuit. The Allison brothers were also regular combatants. Arrangements will be announced later this week.
