DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa first lady Mari Culver has admitted she violated the state's smoking ban by smoking in a state-owned vehicle.
Gov. Chet Culver signed the ban into law in April, and on Thursday his wife released a statement saying she had quit smoking last year but restarted a few months ago and smoked in a state vehicle.
Mari Culver says she regrets the mistake and promises that it won't happen again.
The Des Moines Register reported that Culver was seen smoking in a black SUV the state provides to her family. Culver was in the passenger seat with the window rolled down. A state trooper was driving.
Culver declined to comment beyond the statement released by a spokesman, who did not comment about whether she would be fined. Also, NOW Iowa required the cigaretts to be "fire proof" No discussion on this until they started getting sold. I wonder what else the Dem Governor will come up with, and I don't even smoke.

just in case you are not from Iowa, but we have a law that allows no smoking in any public place (including race track grandstands), in NO vehicles that are business or Govt owned. no smoking in any bar, club, resturant or Govt owned property except the Iowa state fairgrounds.
I thought the fireproof cigarette was pretty funny myself, but the fact is that the attorney general said that they were not saying much about it lol.
Makes ya sort of wonder if Culvers idea of no drinking at any sporting event including car racing will take a life of its own.
Welcome to the Communist state of Iowa race fans.

Actually Duane, the Posse has the same law now, as well as most of the other states...so we aren't the only "Commie" state...

I have no objection to the law whatsoever.
I do have an objection to the people who gripe about the law and still vote for the people who wrote the laws lol.
Actually Perris Ca was the first place I heard of the law.
Really now that I no longer smoke feel it is a great law, but I still wonder, what's next.
There are very few race tracks that I know of that aren't toxic waste dumps due to blown motors, accidents and plain sloopy people, when will racing be next to feel the wrath of the do gooders?

Our law isn't that restrictive. Right now it is a law each city gets to decide on. I'm sure it will be state wide soon. We can't smoke in government buildings, public buildings, restaurants, and bars. It is nice to walk into a place and not smell like smoke when you leave even when you don't smoke.

It's mostly about protecting you from yourself and your own habits, and that is unfortunately a trend that will be greatly expanded in the near future. Think it's ok? How 'bout when they decide to protect you from those nasty methanol fumes???

I guess the "Big Lug" will have to have a slot machine installed in the Suburban so Mari can light up whenever she wants.

She probably started smoking again just trying to deal with his anal retentive control issues.
The best way to make the tobacco industry profitable is to outlaw it. But then the issue is "who gets the profit?".

For src. Casinos, at least Indian Casinos are not exceptions to state laws. State laws simply do not apply to them. If the government of any tribe passes laws outlawing smoking in their Casinos then and only then will they be smoke free. Personally I wish my Tribe would pass such a law however the State of Oklahoma has outlawed smoking in all public places, leaving the Indian Casinos as the smokers only place to light up.Unfortunitly is appears that the vast majority of our Casino patrions smoke.
How many of you Chilibowl regulars are aware that smoking is not allowed in the expo building and hasn't been for years. However my observation has been that it isn't policed at all in the pits and only occasionally in the stands. I didn't see any effort to police it at all last year.

ok, i don't smoke and i HATE cigarette smoke. that said, where do the taxes garnered from cigarette sales go to? if a taxpaying citezen (be it cigarette tax or whatever) is totally denied the ability or the accomodations to engage in what would otherwise be a lawfull act but for the inconvienience of others is getting over the top. to not have an area set aside to accomodate those people is biased. where is the aclu? if cigarette tax is being used in public funding it is even worse. if you are saying no smoking in public are you saying a person can't walk down the street and smoke? can you walk down the street drinking alcohol? maybe, maybe not, but there are public places where you can drink. san francisco is a f'd up place. i think the US should pull all govnt funding from the place. the thing is if they did i would have to say that the city would not be reguired to pay govnt taxes nor would the citezens. the thing is that smokers are taking the diss with out a fight while we have gays marching all over because we told them they can't use the word "married". we gave them the same rights but not the use of the word and they are all pissed off and going around saying THEIR rights have been voilated! i don't understand why they have fought so hard to be different then want to choose a word for their unions that wold not separate them from the rest! they are fighting to be able to check that little box that says "married" and hide behind it instead of full discloser. when a person says they are "gay" that is all they need to say to describe their sexuallity. when a person says they are "straight" it is all they need to say. when a person says they are "married" that should be the only thing they need to say to define it. not then have to further define the definition of the union they are in. sorry got off on a rant there! if you smokers are pissed, light up and parade down the streets like the fags do to protest! hell the fags and lezzies parade all over the f'n place why can't you? or is it that you are only willing to state your case on a message board rather than get out and support your cause? i say fight for the right to light!

The speedway at Rock Rapids, Iowa had to ban smoking a few years ago because the all-wood grandstand was built in the 1880s and they don't want to risk an accidental fire.

"Consider this the next time you see a teenager take a drag on a cigarette: Your state government likely has a financial stake in that kid continuing to smoke. And quite possibly, so does your retirement portfolio.
That was hardly the intention 10 years ago, when a collection of state attorneys general delivered a crushing blow to Big Tobacco. On Nov. 23, 1998, the nation's four largest cigarette sellers agreed to pay $200 billion over 30 years in what seemed like a victory for David over Goliath. The money was supposed to help the states pay for health care and anti-smoking campaigns. Instead, much of it -- even payments that aren't due for 20 years -- has already been spent on politically popular tax breaks through complicated borrowing schemes initiated by Wall Street investment banks.
Because these states have essentially borrowed against future payments from the tobacco industry, they are now dependent on the continued vitality of cigarette sales. If Big Tobacco stumbles, states will be on the hook for these massive, billion-dollar loans. In other words, David and Goliath are now allies"
The rest of the story. http://redtape.msnbc.com/2008/11/ten-years-later.html#posts
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.
