Swindell and Hockett win Western World Championships Sat. nite at Manzanita Speedway
by Windy McDonald

(November 8) The 40 lap main event for the USAC sprint cars on Manzanita Speedway’s half mile track Saturday night had the standing room only crowd on its feet as the battle was all up front. Tracy Hines started on the pole and kept the Tony Stewart Racing sprinter out front for 28 laps before he slowed and Jessie Hockett took over. However the lead was like a hot potato as Kevin Swindell took the lead after Hockett led two laps. Two laps later Hockett was back in front but his car, which was running only on seven cylinders, virtually exploded while working the 38th lap and was engulfed in flames. Hockett was not injured.

Swindell, who had been swapping the lead with Hockett on practically every turn, then, just as he did Friday night, brought the Tom Rolfe car home out front. His father, Sammy, has two Western World championship and is now only one ahead of his son.

The battle for the lead was, for the most part, a four car battle as Jerry Coons, Jr., Levi Jones and Dave Darland were close to the leaders. Coons finished only two car lengths behind Swindell with Jones third and Darland fourth. In addition to Coons two other Arizona drivers had top ten finishes. Jeremy Sherman finished fifth and 16 year old Chad Boat, also from Phoenix, was sixth. Then came Hines, Brad Sweet, Shane Cottle and Cole Whitt.

USAC opened the final night of the 41st Western World Championships with the 15 lap "D" main which placed the top ten finishers in the "C" feature. Chris Windom beat Cody Williams into the first turn but flipped while working the second lap. He was not injured. Bobby Marcum the took over and led two laps but blew and engine and turned the lead over to Williams who lead nine laps before Matt Mitchell took over and led the final two laps. Williams finished second ahead of Alan Ballard, J.T. Imperial and Damion Gardner.

The 20 lap "C" main put eight drivers into the "B" feature and the entire 24 car field let it hang out in an effort to get to the big money event. Robert Ballou led 18 laps and appeared to have a win but Brady Short had different ideas and made a high line pass at the white flag and took the win. Ballou, was second ahead of J.J. Yeley, Brett Burdette, Kyle Hirst, Johnny Herrera, Nathan High and Tyler Brown.

Those who qualified for the 20 lap "B" main had their work cut out as only 12 main event berths were open. Darren Hagen had the pole but led only one lap before Dustin Morgan took over. The race was clean until a yellow came out on the 12th lap when Yeley’s car burst into flames. The fire was quickly extinguished and the race resumed with Morgan still out front. He stayed there until the checked flag with Chad Boat in second, Hagen third, Charles Davis, Jr. fourth and Nic Faas fifth.

For the third straight night Hockett topped the field in the 360 main event. "The Rocket’ started on the pole and went wire to wire and beat Sherman, Casey Shuman, Nathan High and Andy Reinbold. Finishing out the top ten were Mike Leslie, Brady Bacon, Bobby Marcum, R.J. Johnson and Johnathon Henry.

Shon Deskins ran over a wheel on Davis’ sprinter and did a number of flips in turn three while working the ninth lap. Davis later had contact with the car driven by Gary Taylor and both ended up in the front straightaway wall and neither car could continue.

The top eight finishers in each of two 12 lap "B" mains transferred to the feature. R. J. Johnson found the fast groove and drove out of the fifth row to take the win over Henry, Nick Aiuto, Justin Grant, Thomas Ogle, Bo Baker and Jon Stanbrough. Marcum topped the field in the second "B" as he held off Deskins, Bugs Norbury, Brady Bacon, Mike Martin, Josh Pelkey, Jeremy Reagles and Jesse Dunham.

Hockett Takes ASCS Western World Championship; Completes Three Night Sweep!

Lonnie Wheatley, PHOENIX, Ariz. (November 8, 2008) – Jesse Hockett completed the weekend trifecta of Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region competition by wiring the field in Saturday night's 30-lap championship finale of the Parker Store ASCS Non-Wing Western World Championships atop Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval.

Hockett rode a perilous cushion to perfection and denied a late bid from ASCS Canyon Region champion Jeremy Sherman to pocket Saturday night's $3,000 winner's share, running his weekend ASCS earnings to $6,000 after topping preliminary features on both Thursday and Friday as well.

Hockett and Sherman were chased to the stripe by Casey Shuman, who slid past Nathan High for third on the 28th lap, with Andrew Reinbold rounding out the top five.

"That little track is a lot of fun, and it's a lot faster than most people think," Hockett commented from victory lane. "And they had it just the way I like it tonight."

Hockett gunned into the lead from the pole position at the outset and paced the entire distance aboard the Massey Motorsports No. 2az machine.

"We just rebuilt this car and it worked great, Jim (Massey) always gives me a great car," Hockett explained. "Jim is always great for us, Parker Store helps us out, it seems like we have a lot of great sponsors out here in Phoenix so it's pretty awesome to win this for all of 'em."

Sherman took second away from Gary Taylor following a lap nine restart and had a shot at Hockett following the race's final caution after 21 laps for a tangle that eliminated Taylor and Charles Davis, Jr.

Sherman closed in on Hockett with a handful of laps remaining, but Hockett worked lapped traffic to perfection to secure the triumph and deny Sherman his 15th ASCS Canyon Region feature win of the season.

Sherman still collected his second consecutive ASCS Canyon Region crown in Fred Bryan's F&E Development No. 77, with Shuman's late move netting show honors in Rex Foster's No. 32.

Nathan High settled for a strong fourth place run in Robbie Allen's ABC Body Shop No. 12, with Reinbold fifth in the AME Electrical Contracting No. 19.

After transferring from the tail of the second "B" Main, Brady Bacon charged from 16th to claim sixth, with second "B" Main winner Bobby Marcum in seventh.

Originally crossing the stripe in sixth, Mike Leslie was credited with eighth after being docked two positions for hitting the cone on the final restart, with first "B" Main winner R.J. Johnson and Johnathon Henry completing the top ten.

Prior to the Taylor-Davis tangle with 21 laps in the books, the feature was interrupted on just a pair of occasions. The first caution flew after five laps for a Nick Aiuto spin, with the second yellow appearing four laps later for Justin Grant. Shon Deskins tumbled in turn three on the ensuing restart, walking away uninjured.

Swindell and Hockett win Friday night Western World features at Manzanita Speedway
by Windy McDonald

(November 7)Kevin Swindell and Jesse Hockett won their respective main events in Friday night’s NAPA/Budweiser/Parker Store Western World Championships at Manzanita Speedway but Jerry Coons, Jr. and Jeremy Sherman did the most celebrating.

Coons became the USAC Silver Crown champion Thursday at P.I.R. and his fifth place finish in Friday night’s 25 feature made him only the fifth driver in USAC history to win all three USAC divisions. He won the Midget title the past two year. Coons who hails from Tucson is the second Arizona driver to accomplish the feat. JJ Yeley of Phoenix won all three divisions in the same year as did Tony Stewart. Sherman celebrated a fourth consecutive Arizona Sprint Car championship with a third place finish in the American Sprint Car Series 20 lap main event.

Charles Davis Jr. shot out of the second row and took the lead in the Discount Tire American Sprint Car Series on the first lap. He steadily pulled away from the field but yellow flags kept the field close. Hockett, Davis’ team mate on the Massey Motorsports team, was methodically working his way toward the front after starting ninth. He finally worked his way into second and despite numerous efforts to take the lead he was not successful. Davis was running the high side and even though Hockett made a pass entering turn two and slid wide Davis would make a cut back move and held the lead until a late yellow flag again slowed the pace. On the restart the battle began again and Hockett finally took the lead with just two laps remaining. Gary Taylor who finished second Thursday night was fourth under the checkered flag just in front of Mike Leslie. Rounding out the top ten were Brad Sweet, Nathan High, Casey Shuman, Josh Pelkey and Andy Reinbold.

Heat races went to Sherman, Derek Williams, Pelkey, Mike Martin and Brady Bacon. R.J. Johnson and Jeremy Reagles won the two semi mains.

After scoring his second win of the weekend Hockett had the adrenaline surging and beat Shane Cottle into the first turn and pulled away. Cottle hung onto second as Swindell was making his move after starting sixth. He finally dropped Cottle into second and went to work on Hockett. Traffic was in play for most of the 25 laps and Swindell finally found an opening and wrested the lead from Hockett on the 16th lap. Hockett stayed close and crossed the finish line about five car lengths behind. In spite of starting 28 cars in the race it was run without a yellow flag and Swindell stopped the clock with a time of 9:08.87 which averaged out to 83.217 m.p.h. The overall 410 record is held by Jerry Coons, Jr. who set a mark of 8:10.81 in the 2005 Western.

Levi Jones finished third after starting ninth and Cottle was fourth in front of Coons. The rest of the top ten were Jeremy Sherman, Bud Kaeding, Tracy Hines, Brad Sweet and Mike Spencer.

The ten lap heat races were won Hagen, Swindell, R.J. Johnson, Danny Sheridan and Rick Ziehl. Morgan won the 12 laps semi and J.J. Yeley topped the field in the eight lap "C" main. The "C" main was hard to get started as Nadine Gardner flipped getting into the first turn. She was okay and once the track was cleared flagman Jeff Stetson displayed the green again. This time Daron Clayton did a series of flips. He was okay and after again clearing the track the field took green but action was again halted when Keith Williamsom flipped in turn three on the restart. The fourth heat also had problems as Damion Gardner and Jeff Bland, Jr. flipped. They were not injured.

A total of 116 cars made for a long night as the USAC cars qualified their 64 car field and then each division ran five heats. In addition the ASCS ran two semi mains and USAC ran one.

Brad Sweet was the quickest qualifier as he stopped the clock at 18.473. Forty cars qualified within a second of Sweet’s timed lap.

Hockett Does It Again on ASCS Western World Championships Night Two!

Lonnie Wheatley, PHOENIX, Ariz. (November 7, 2008) – Jesse Hockett picked off his second Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region feature win in as many nights by topping Friday night's 20-lap Parker Store ASCS Non-Wing Western World Championship preliminary main event atop Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval.

After wiring the field in Thursday night's feature, "The Rocket" had to utilize some late race heroics to take Friday night's win away from Massey Motorsports teammate Charles Davis, Jr., after a race-long battle for the top position.

While Hockett gridded the feature field from inside the fifth row, "Chargin" Charles Davis, Jr., made a quick burst from the second row inside to take the lead away from front row starters Josh Pelkey and Gary Taylor on the opening circuit of the main event.

Hockett needed just four rounds to charge from ninth to second and set his sights on Davis for the point. The pair of Orange cars proceeded to battle throughout, trading slide jobs several times along the way.

Davis successfully fought off the bulk of Hockett's bids, appearing to finally have the race in hand until a final caution flew for Brady Bacon's disabled mount, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag.

Hockett took quick advantage, sliding into the lead in turns one and two and then beating Davis in the drag race down the backstretch for the lead and ultimate win.

Davis settled for runner-up honors behind the Warsaw, MO, racer, with Jeremy Sherman securing a second consecutive ASCS Canyon Region championship with a third-place finish.

In a torrid battle behind the leaders, Gary Taylor claimed fourth with 13th-starter Mike Leslie nipping Brad Sweet at the line for fifth. Nathan High was seventh, with 19th-starter Casey Shuman, Pelkey and Andrew Reinbold completing the top ten.

Sherman, Derek Williams, Pelkey, Mike Martin and Bacon topped Friday night's heat race action, with Jeremy Reagles and R.J. Johnson winning the "B" Mains.

Hockett and Gary Taylor will start Saturday night's Parker Stores ASCS Non-Wing Western World Championships feature event from the front row, with Sherman, High, Shuman, Leslie, Davis and Reinbold also locked into the championship main event. The balance of the 24-car finale will be filled out with the top eight finishers from each of Saturday night's Twin "B" Mains.

Missouri driver wins Thursday night Western World Qualifying Feature at Manzanita Speedway
by Windy McDonald

(November 6) Out of state drivers finished one-two in Thursday nights Parker Store American Sprint Car Series feature race at Manzanita Speedway.

Jesse Hockett out of Warsaw, MO started on the pole in the 20 lap qualifying feature and was never headed. Gary Taylor, Sapulpa, OK finished three car lengths back and he was pressured by Nathan High who came out of the ninth row to finish third. Casey Shuman came back from an early crash that eliminated three cars held off ASCS points leader Jeremy Sherman for fourth. Rounding out the top ten were Nick Aiuto, Thomas Ogle, Shon Deskins, Zach Sawyers and Bugs Norbury.

Charles Davis, Jr., ranked second in points, started alongside Sherman in the tenth row and had a good run that carried him to fourth and was challenging the leaders when a steering part broke and ended his run with five laps remaining. He was credited with a 15th place finish.

Passing was difficult in the heat races but the track was fast. The top three from each of six heat races for the 53 car field made the feature and three from each of two semi mains also qualified.

The top three in the first heat finished where they started with Rex Calderwood, Johnathon Henry and Lealand Michael leading the field. Mike Leslie came out of the second row and beat pole sitter Ogle and Norbury who started eighth. Heat three went to Taylor who shared the front row with Brian O’Donnell who finished second ahead of second row starter Robert Ballou. The fourth heat was won by Andy Reinbold who beat Sawyers and Joshua Williams. It was more of the same in the fifth heat as Hockett beat Justin Grant and Carson Ditsch. The final heat put Bobby Marcum, Aiuto and Bo Baker in the feature.

Nathan High came out of the third row to win the first semi with Davis finishing second after starting eighth. Deskins was the passing master as he made the feature by coming from 17th to third. The 22 car main event was filled with the top three from the second semi. Shuman took the win over Sherman and Leland Michael

The second semi was halted with only one lap completed when Joshua Williams flipped several times. He was treated by the paramedics and was alert and talking but was transferred to St. Joseph’s Hospital for observation. It was reported that he was unconscious for a short period of time after the crash.

The Championship finals for both the 360 c.i. sprinters and the USAC sprints will run tonight (Saturday) with the both the ASCS and USAC crowning their champions. Jerry Coons, Jr. won the USAC Silver Crown title and the two time USAC Midget champion and winner of last year’s Western holding a lead over Levi Jones. Hockett a Rocket in ASCS Western World Opener!

Lonnie Wheatley, PHOENIX, Ariz. (November 6, 2008) – Missouri's Jesse Hockett kicked off the Parker Store ASCS Non-Wing Western World Championships atop Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval by wiring the field in Thursday night's 20-lap preliminary feature.

Hockett gunned into the lead at the outset of the feature and weathered several cautions along the way to capture his first Discount Tire. Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region feature win aboard the Massey Motorsports No. 2az entry.

"It was a lucky night for us," Hockett commented from victory lane. "It's not too often you draw the pole for both your heat and the feature, it makes it easier."

After winning his heat race, Hockett drew the pole position for the main event. And, after outgunning fellow front row starter Rex Calderwood on the initial start and then Zach Sawyers on the second try, never looked back.

While Hockett cruised out front, O'Reilly ASCoT National shoe Gary Taylor climbed from the sixth starting position into second by the midway point and held on the rest of the way for an auspicious start to a wingless weekend.

Chasing Hockett and Taylor across the stripe were ninth-row starters Nathan High and Casey Shuman, with current series points leader Jeremy Sherman charging from 20th to round out the top five.

Shuman rebounded from an opening lap incident and charged from the tail of the field with a broken right rear shock to snare fourth, while Sherman recovered from a cut left rear tire on the fourth round after contact that resulted in Bo Baker tipping over.

Seventeen-year-old Nick Aiuto held down the third position until a last-lap bobble relegated him to a sixth-place finish, with Thomas Ogle, 21st-starter Shon Deskins, Zach Sawyers and Bugs Norbury completing the top ten.

After blitzing from 19th to fourth in the opening 12 circuits, Charles Davis, Jr., strong run was cut short with suspension woes.

Rex Calderwood, Mike Leslie, Taylor, Andrew Reinbold, Hockett and Bobby Marcum topped heat race action, with High and Shuman winning the twin "B" Mains.

Did car owner Jim Massey campaign Hockett's 2az sprinter during ASCS events at Manzy this year. If so who was the driver? I believe that Charles Davis Jr. not only campaigned a Massey sprinter during the Western, but also during the season, right? Also does Massey still have a 410? Just curious.
