COONS TAKES SILVER CROWN TITLE BY 5! EAST RACES TO “COPPER WORLD CLASSIC” VICTORY
NOVEMBER 10, 2008 --- Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. is the champion of the 2008 USAC K & N Silver Crown Series presented by Optima Batteries. He finished ninth in Thursday series finale at Phoenix, Ariz. and edged Dave Darland by five points for the title.
Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. won Thursday’s “Copper World Classic” presented by Fast Signs. East captured the pole at 139.297 mph in his Ford Racing/Club Sport Beast/Ford and led all but four laps to win the 100-miler over defending race winner Cameron Dodson, Dave Steele, Dave Darland and Jacob Wilson.
East led the opening lap, then yielded to Ryan Newman for laps 2-5. East regained the lead on lap six and led the rest of the way.
East’s victory was worth $20,500 to his Klatt Enterprises team. The race was slowed by five caution periods, one when Newman’s engine expired on lap 15.
