Ok clever ones. I need a one heat format for a low key club type sprint shows with no time trials.
We have got a part season point score so I would like to use that for the grid inversion to start with. I'm not a great fan of drawing the heat line up but it might work with passing points.
Will be no more than 24 cars split into two heats.
Using the top 12 gives a 6 inversion per heat.
I need help with the point scoring and passing points.
Or any other ideas that might be fair for fans and drivers.

The ASCS passing points system is 55 points to winner, 52 for second, and 3 down for every posiion. And every position you gain from the start is worth 1.5 points. Thus if you go from 7th to 3rd, that's 49 + 6 which would be a toal of 55 passing points for the heat. An easier to calculate variation of this would be 30 points to the winner, with 2 points less for each position on back, and one point for each position gained. Here you would have the same effect with a position gain being worth half that of the difference between finishing positions.

I like passing points to be worth more than finishing points. IE if you go down 3 points per position then add 2 for each spot improved.
Why don't you like drawing for heat lineups? What is the drawback in this instance?

With the drawing deal. I was just thinking of the fans. (Me) It would also make the club points battle for 12th more interesting. A draw would be easier and fairer for all drivers I guess.
Thanks

If you only run two heats, and you get 20-24 cars, you're looking at 10-12 cars in each heat. So I'd think you'll need to add some weight to the passing points vs. finishing position points.
Perhaps you could use a format similar to the World Dirt Racing League, where they give more than just the customary 1.5 pts for each position gained.

down is expensive.

WDRL is what I was thinking of when I mis-typed my post about points weight. (trying to simplify it a little...WDRL Prez Jim Wilson's wife Nancy is a computer programmer by trade and she likes to show off her skills)
There are some things I do not like about WDRL qualifying format (time trial hot laps?) but overall I like giving more points to cars passed vs finishing position. Let a guy that starts last and finishes fifth get more points than a guy that starts on the pole and holds on to second.
Another consideration is what you do with the points once they are awarded....invert for feature, run a dash, etc.
I like the draw for heats from a fans standpoint. Especially in the case of a small "low key club type" show. Your drivers are probably all used to running with each other and know each others tendiencies which would reduce the "increased wreck factor" stigma that most draw shows seem to suffer from. Drawing for heat starts will also shake up the shows a little bit....with a small confined group that doesn't change much I am sure any sort of handicapping will start to result in nearly identical heat lineups from race to race.

Under ASCS passing points, if a guy went from 12th to 5th he would end up with 53.5 points, and if a guy started on the pole and finished 2nd he would only end up with 52.

I would think that in today's world it should go something like this:
Winning the heat should equal 55 points and then deduct 18 points to give to the last (12th) place car.
Second place should get 52 points and then deduct 15 points to give to the 11th place car
Third place should get 49 points and then deduct 12 points to give to the 10th place car
Fourth place should get 46 points and then deduct 9 points to give to the 9th place car
Fifth place should get 43 points and then deduct 6 points to give to the 8th place car
Sixth place should get 40 points and then deduct 3 points to give to the 7th place car
Seventh place gets 34 points plus the 3 "stimulus incentive points" from 6th place
Eighth place gets 31 points plus the 6 "stimulus incentive points" from 5th place
Ninth place gets 28 points plus the 9 "stimulus incentive points" from 4th place
Tenth place gets 25 points plus the 12 "stimulus incentive points" from 3rd place
Eleventh place gets 22 points plus the 15 "stimulus incentive points" from 2nd place
Twelfth place gets 19 points plus the 18 "stumulus incentive points" from 1st place
