Lap-7: Red is out after Oskie initially smacks the wall then flips between turns 1-2.

A Feature (20 Laps) T-7:17.17
1. Sammy Swindell [2] $1,000; 2. Chuck Gurney [1] $600; 3. Doug Wolfgang [6] $450; 4. Shane Carson [7]; 5. Edd French, 6. Leland McSpadden, 7. Lee James, 8. Bob Ewell, 9. Rick Ferkel, 10. Fred Linder, 11. Rendy Boldrini, 12. Jim Edwards, 13. Rick Montgomery, 14. Mike Brooks, 15. Jack Hewitt, 16. Tony Simon, 17. Dick Morris, 18. Bill McCormick, DNF-19. Larry Patton. DNS-Tim Green.

Green loses the rear end shortly after push-off. Swindell gets the jump over Gurney at the drop of the Green. The duo would quickly open their advantage over the field. Slower traffic would impede Gurney and his charge to the front with Sammy cruising to the seemingly comfortable win. The Feature Pay-Off was delayed as a protest filed from Rick Ferkel. Ferkel claims the Yellow light came of briefly when Sammy crossed the line for the Checkers amid the slower traffic. Ferkel claims not only did he, but others lost positions in the final run to the line. Officials discuss the issue with Scorers, Starter and other Drivers and found Ferkel was 9th on Lap-19 and 9th after the Checkers. The finish stands. Only McSpadden and James each advanced two spots in that final run. Linder was the last car on the lead lap.

With all due respect, if Steve didn't have Karl for all those years, he wouldn't have the win total he has.

Sammy does it all. Driver, setup, crew chief, fabricator, and has won every major race at least once.

Plus, Sammy chose not to run several years with the WoO. If he would have, he would have many more wins.

At Baylands Raceway Park in Fremont, CA one year back in the '80s, 3 day show, he qualified the first night for the outside front row Saturday night. Well Sammy wanted to start on the pole so he threw away his qualifying night and re-qualified the 2nd night and got the pole for the A main on Saturday night.

That is confidence and greatness. This is why Sammy is one of The Big Three.
