USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS IN JACK KINDOLL CLASSIC AND LIGHTNING SPRINT CARS SATURDAY AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY!
(NOVEMBER 11, 2008, PERRIS, CA) West Coast race fans only have two chances left to watch 410 Major League Sprint Car racing in 2008. One of those chances will come this Saturday night, November 15th, when Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply presents the Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars in the 12th Annual 30-lap Jack Kindoll Classic at Don Kazarian's famous Perris Auto Speedway. In addition to powerful cars and stars of the USAC/CRA Series, the popular California Lightning Sprint Cars will be on hand as well to decide their 2008 series champion. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00 PM.
Saturday's race honors the late Jack Kindoll. A longtime car owner with the original CRA, Kindoll won three car owner championships with National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Jimmy Oskie behind the wheel in 1976, 1977 and 1979. Kindoll was also a respected racing official and a racing innovator with his JFK Company. A list of past Jack Kindoll Classic champions can be found at the end of this release.
For Temecula, California's Mike Spencer, Saturday will be one of the biggest races of his life. The 27-year old Cal Poly Pomona engineering graduate holds a 78-point lead over Yorba Linda, California's Blake Miller in the 2008 championship standings. With a strong performance on Saturday, Spencer could lock up what would be his first ever major Sprint Car championship. While the championship would be the for first Spencer, it would be the 10th major title for his car owner Ron Chaffin. Chaffin last won a championship when "The Demon" Damion Gardner steered his famous red #50 car to the 2005 USAC/CRA title. Chaffin also won eight (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003) car owner crowns with the original SCRA.
While Spencer enjoys a 78-point lead over Miller in the standings, he had better be prepared for a fight on Saturday. A little over one month ago, Spencer had a 109 point lead, but Miller, a 21-year old who won the 2005 VRA Sprint Car Championship and who was the 2006 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, closed to within less than 30 points two weeks ago at the 13th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals. Miller, who like Spencer is a second generation driver, will not stop fighting for the title until the final bell rings.
In addition to Spencer, Miller and the rest of the USAC/CRA stars, fans will again be treated to see the return of Damion Gardner on Saturday. Gardner finished his season in the Midwest with a 10th place in the 2008 USAC National Sprint Car standings. "The Demon" last won at The PAS in Lucas Oil USAC/CRA action on October 18th.
On the Lightning Sprint Car side of the program, past champion Brent Sexton, of Lakeside, California, can lock up another title by finishing third or better in his heat race. However, it is a scramble behind him as second through sixth are separated by a mere 55 points. In addition, the fight for Rookie of Year in the Lightning Sprints will be decided between young Alec Bender and John Bluntach. Bender holds a 74 point advantage over Bluntach heading into their season finale on Saturday.
Saturday's pre Thanksgiving racing feast will include qualifying for the USAC/CRA stars and heats, B and wild A mains for both divisions.
