I went to the UMSS meeting on Saturday and am really impressed with the future of racing in our area. Ron has a great idea for us to race at a new venue next year. However we did not need Steiney talking about all his problems with his motor issues and Tony K's running his 377cubic inch car this year at Arlington and varied big events in the area. It wasted alot of time. I'm sure I'll get blasted for opening my big mouth but what the heck. I would like to help the b mod drivers at the meeting to make their engines competitive. We have some extra pistons etc to help their motors make more power. We don't need Cristy on here bashing Joe and Chuck for their great help in this effort. I hope we have a great following for this Series. I think it will be just fine if we all work together in 2009. Thanks, Dave Tabor [email protected] 34tw race team

I wasn't able to attend the meeting however, it sounds like there were some compromises made for teams that had their own ideas, eg. roller cams/lifters, crank driven water pump, aftermarket blocks, and Mallory mags just to name a few. I hope everyone gets the feeling what the true intentions of this effort are. While Joe, Chuck, and Ron are getting the ball rolling, everyone has a voice in what happens with the UMSS. After all, anyone who wants to race with them is partly responsible for making this work. Also, remember that sometimes we have to help those who are too stupid to help themselves. That's kinda what the goal of the UMSS is it seems.

i agree its to bad they opened up the motor rules. things like roller cams no compression rules, and aftermarket blocks add huge cost to motors

They don't have a specific schedule yet. But they did say 4-6 shows at CLS, 5-10 shows at Kopellah, and a few shows with the IRA group as a support class. I am guessing the complete schedule will be out later in the winter.

I havnt seen anywhere what the projected purse for this deal is. Was that discussed or is that yet to be determined? The other thing I was wondering about is the dozen or so cars that are sitting in garages in the twin cities? I have supported CLS probably as much as anyone in the 360 sprints over the years and just dont recall that many cars there. I wouldve liked to attend the meeting Sat but couldnt make it. I think your rules are just fine but nowhere do I see the possibility of a $6000 motor possible and I didnt think it was possible all along (been doing this long enough to know better then that). There is no way you guys will ever control the spending on these cars. All teams spend the same on their race cars (all they have and then some) some just have more then others. I support UMSS and all its people and I hope it succeeds. The idea of more sprint races at CLS is great we have always loved that place. Good Luck to all involved..............Kent Winters

Hi Dave,

I was a Midwest Mod driver at that meeting. I think this series is a great idea. For anyone that wants to see sprint car racing on a more regular basis around Minneapolis they need to support Ron and his group. The focus should be on brining new drivers and fans to sprint car racing. There are a lot of stock car drivers in this area. For anyone who has the need for speed but can't afford to spend over $10,000 dollars on an engine this class is for them. I really hope people support this deal because it will take a long time for it to grow. This group will have to show it's stability and afford-ability to potential drivers before they make the switch. I am not sure how they should pursue drivers but it will take time. I feel Ron has a good understanding of the situation and has a plan to help fix it. Sprint car racing is almost dead in this area but he is trying to revive it. I think this is a great opportunity if we all work together trying to support and promote this class. We may not all agree on the each rule but we have to keep in mind the bigger picture which is more sprint car racing in an area that is dominated by stock cars.

I would love to buy a sprint car and race it in 2009. You never know that might happen. I would have to sell my Midwest mod first and decide if I should build up my current engine or if I should start from scratch. My other problem is I am 6'5" tall and I would need a 2" taller chassis to fit in it. We'll see what happens. I am getting married next weekend and I have a lot going on right now. Most likely I will have to support this series in other ways in 2009. But if I have my way I will be driving a sprint car in the near future. I just need to raise the cash. Anyone have a sprint car they would trade for a Midwest Mod? LOL! I figure I would throw that out there. Anyway, I could ramble on forever about this. But I can't say it enough. If people want to see regular sprint car racing in this area they need to support this series.

Hi Kent,

I don't remember the exact breakdown but it is $700 to win, $125 to start, and the total purse is $4,750.

Kent ,

E-mail me , Ron or Chuck about the purposed payoff. And you are right about the engines. This spec is a alternate to running restricted. Lake I have said all along you can build this for 8500.00 if you use some used parts. You also know Kent you can buy ASCS legal engines all day long on Hoseheads classified for 10 12 grand. Will they compete at Knoxville or Jackson ?no properly not but they will sure as hell compete at Kopella and Cedar lake. I am very glad at the news of your support of the UMSS.

The UMSS web page is under construction and will be up in a few weeks. All of this will be posted then.

Joe

Ouch $700 to win??? Can a team from somewhere other than the TWIN CITIES AREA afford to drive to and compete at these races?  Ok $700 to win and $125 to start, than what will the break-down be, $350-$400 for second  and $150-$200 for 3rd and so-on and the total purse is $4,750 ? The frame, tires, wing, rear end, steering sector, shocks, and all the rest of the PARTS still cost the same no matter what class of motors you propose to run. OK so I did-not attend this meeting and do NOT have all the facts of your proposel of this motor rule.  I will ask you this, what can you offer the sprint car drivers and fans that is not already being offered? ASCS 360, 305 class from Iowa, 317 class at Jackson, the IMCA 360's from Arlington? I guess I didn't realize there was so many sprint cars setting around in garages in the twin cities area.

fastasu , Where are from? Who are you? Do you really believe your questions are valid or are you looking for a fight ? It has been said a million times what the UMSS can offer. As for the purse, well you don't know squat about the current payoffs or you would'nt have stated this junk. You have two choices. #1 Support the UMSS. # 2 Don't support it. It will grow and prosper with or without you.

fastasu:I will ask you this, what can you offer the sprint car drivers and fans that is not already being offered? reply- how about weekly racing in the twin city area. . why is it that the critics never have the balls to post with a real name. how could a real sprint car fan be critical of more sprint car racing close to home. just another f...ing loser with some agenda and nothing better to do.

i think fast has a valid point. at $700 to win you wont attract many cars from a long distance so you have to bank on the fact that there are a bunch of cars in the metro sitting collecting dust as stans told us before.

does anybody have a list of cars in the metro that havent raced in a while and will be supporting the umss?

to stockcar5 and fastasu

Do you want to be involved in sprint car racing closer to home or not? Stockcar5, do you even own a sprint car? As for sprint cars sitting collecting dust, why not bring them out of the cobwebs now that there will be a venue much closer to home? For the last few years we have traveled as far as 500- 600 miles to attend an ASCS venue race. The closest race for us is Cedar Lake which is about an hour drive. As for purses, we were traveling 2 hrs one way to race at Arlington where the top place wins $300 and drops from there quickly and there is also a heads claim rule there. What exactly do you want or expect, for the race to be in your backyard. If so, build a racetrack and offer a $5000 to win purse. Put your money where your mouth is or shut it.

I have been reading these posts and have to respond to all the negatives that have been posted about the people behind the UMSS and what they are trying to accomplish. These people are trying to do nothing more than rekindle the sport of open wheel racing on a local bassis which has been their passion for many years. Anyone who is looking at the "TO WIN" aspect does not know their ass from their elbow when it comes to sprint car ownership. Owning a sprint car is not a money making deal. If you are looking at the "TO WIN" as part of your budget, you might want to look into another way to spend your weekends during the summer. Even with the engine package proposed this will be a big investment for all parties involved. With that said you are looking at a group of individuals that are trying to put a series together to revitalize sprint car racing in the Twin Cities and surrounding area and not break the bank doing it. Not the World of Outlaws or the ASCS but a group of weekend racers to go out and have some fun open wheel racing. With the population base you have to draw from I would hope this will be a win for the racers and the fans of the twin cities and surrounding area. Good luck!!!
