"Drive for 5" Late Model Series comes to Donnellson in '09

By Jake Croxton – [email protected]

Donnellson, Iowa (October 22, 2008) – Race fans have been asking for more Late Model action at the Lee County Speedway. In 2009, those fans will inch ever-closer to a full-time program with the advent of the Ideal Ready Mix / Pilot Grove Savings Bank "Drive for 5" IMCA Late Model Series, an 11-race series featuring IMCA Late Models. "We are so excited about adding more races to the schedule for next season and tonight's attendance at the informational meeting indicates to me that we will have a full field of cars on the track," said Lee County Speedway Track Promoter Terry Hoenig. "We couldn't have put this program together at this level without the help of our sponsors and commitments from the drivers. We have tremendous supporters that really want to see the series succeed and the grandstands fill up with fans." The "Drive for 5" Series will feature 11 IMCA National point events at the Lee County Fairgrounds 3/8-mile. IMCA Late Model competitors will race for $1,000 to win and $150 to start in the 25-lap feature events. The Mid-Season Championship is billed as the "Topless 30," in which competitors will take the tops of their cars off for the night. Drivers will qualify using a passing points system for this night only and a dash for cash is planned with the top 6 cars in passing points qualifying. These 6 cars will not only be racing for cash but will be competing for their starting position in the night's "Topless 30" main event. "The Topless Race is going to be lots of fun." Hoenig added, "This is just one of many ideas we have come up with to make 2009 exciting for our fans." With the minimum 10 events completed during the season, the track will also crown a full-fledged IMCA Track Champion and they will earn the $1,000 and full bonus points that go along with it.

So where does the "Drive for 5" come in? Following the completion of the 2009 points season, Lee County Speedway will host a round of the Deery Brothers Summer Series competition in September. Any driver that competes in 10 of 11 events for track points will have their car marked as qualified for the "Driver for 5" during the Deery Brothers Special. If one of those drivers is able to capture the Donnellson Deery Brothers checkered flag, it will pay a cool $5,000 to win instead of the customary $2,000.
