Many of the cars, even, into the 60s, were oxy/acetylene gas welded using mild steel rod. I've seen cars welded using "coathangers" for filler wire.

I built several sprint frames in the late 60s & early 70s using 1 7/16, .095 wall moly tubing I bought at an aircraft surplus yard in Wichita, KS. I used a welding rod with a nickle content & a Linclon 225 welder to weld them. I am not a professional welder but had advise from a certified welder. On the cars I fielded myself, I stripped them completely down after the season closed to check for any cracks. I never had any problems at all nor did any of the other cars I built with welds. The cars I built are on one of the links here with my name on it. I did use coat hangers and gas to weld the exhaust systems.
