That's me alright, Rick Ungar, though I'm having a hard time remembering any details of this day.

After I scanned that negative the other day I was really confused as to who was driving the 28d that afternoon. I had to look at other negatives from the '83 Nationals ( you were in the 65 car and won the Mystery feature on Fri Night ) to compare helmets to be sure it was you before I had the others here guess who the driver was...

The 28d was never raced at the '83 Nationals...very strange

It is strange. I stopped at Daryl Sauciers shop Friday and asked him about it as I figured he was the mechanic on the 28D. His memory was a little fuzzy too as he thought I drove it at Knoxville and Lakeside, Ks, but he had this day confused with 1986 when Haud drove the 1ST and was injured at the Grove and Daryl called me to drive the 1ST at Lakeside and at the Nationals. Daryl said that Sam Bowers had decided to quit and Daryl had the equipment out at Cindy's dads shop in DesMoines and apparently somehow him and I hooked up and ran the car the day after the 83 Nationals. You are right about me driving the 65 car at the Nationals in 83 and winning the Mystery Feature. I remember that well as it was one of the most fun races I ever drove in. It was a helluva battle between myself, Hewitt and Tim Green. I racked my mind and the more I thought about it I kind of remembered driving the 28 at the DesMoines fairgrounds. I just went to my basement as I'm writing this and dug out some old records that I used to keep and sure enough I show that I drove the 28D on August 14th and finished 7th in the A main. That's it, no other details.

Rack your brain some more. Who was,what ever became of the'Lone Star Racing' car you drove. You were at Wilmot WI, we were pitted next to you. I do remember Duece Terrill being with you on this car at the time, wrenching. I do remember Bobby Allen having on his checkered flag racing sneakers with his driver uniform that had duct tape across the name of it as it was someone else's uniform this particular evening. Ahhh those were the days...Can't even remember year?I believe the name was Bishop? That was a nice looking piece.It was a white car,cant remember #hhhmmm..Shortly after this,maybe season's end. Didn't ever see that car anymore. Someone else did drive this car for a short while after you, I am pretty sure. Step into the wayback machine. How's things going for you these days,anyways?

Blaney drove the Bishop, Lone Star #2 on the WoO tour the first few months of the '85 season as well.

what ever happened to Bishops? Do you know? They were on the scene for a couple years ,then disappeared. they were nice people.

It was 1984 and the car owners were Mike and Barb Bishop. I put that deal together in June of 84 and we ran the rest of the WoO season in it. Duece and I had an ugly parting of the ways after the Outlaw schedule ended and Blaney finished the 84 season and started the 85 season in it. I raced mainly in Ca. in Jim Klein's #39 in 85 and I don't recall when the Lonestar # 2 team went away. It was a beautifull car and the Bishops were wonderfull people. They provided me with the car that I won my only WoO race in and I'm forever greatfull to them for that.

Things are going well. I'm still living in the Indy area and I've been selling semi's for Jeff Stoops for eleven plus years now. I'm married with a 16 year old son named Steve after my Dad. Ruracing, that brings back some memories for me. My uncle was the promoter at West Memphis in 1980, or maybe it was 1981. It seems like I remember you running there, although I don't remember if you were running there every week. And if I remember right, you were driving a #6R back then?

As far as the Bishop car, I remember Blaney driving it at the Devils Bowl Winternationals in 1984. It was a white #2 with a blue frame. He and Sammy Swindell had one heckuva race in the Friday night preliminary feature. None of us from down south had ever heard of Blaney, but we knew who he was after than night. He made Sammy work for that win. It was one of the best winged races I ever saw.

I came to Memphis in 1978 to drive for Bobby Sparks. In 79 I drove for Gene Langdon in the #17 and finished 2nd in points to Rick Hood. In 1980 I drove the M.A. Brown car wrenched by Ken Conrad and won the points championship. Those were the only 2 years I ran the ditch on a weekly basis, in 81 I jumped around a bit and in 82 I ran the full WoO series finishing 7th in points.

Now that I remember it, it was for sure 1981 that my uncle had the track. I'm originally from Memphis, but moved to Dallas in 1975. I spent a month of the summer that year with my family in Memphis and spent Saturday nights at the ditch. Hard to believe that was 27 years ago. But I remember you racing there at least once during that time. I also remember Jimmy Cofer winning a feature on one of those weeks. One week I remember Sammy dropping in there driving the Nance #1N, and I remember Mike Ward out-qualifying Sammy that night.

Good to hear from You. Lotsa times, you get into a "where are they now" mode. Now I know were you are anyways. I bet your son is wanting to get into racing in some form,being that you are located in the middle of a gazillion dirt tracks. I would guess were you are located you run into some of your old race cronies quite often in a summers time. These old pictures that people post up on the net are fun to look through as you get quite a range of "characters".

I drove the B&L Electric car for the entire WoO season in 1982. It was the only year that I ran every Outlaw race and we finished 7th in points. It was called "Crockets Rocket".
