These are some pics from an article that was featured in either Life magazine

or Saturday Evening Post. I don't know which. I got the page from the magazine

from my dad almost 50 years ago. He passed away in 1961.

I just got into a box I hadn't looked at for years. I thought there might be some

fans who would be interested in taking a look. Gilmore was where the action was

after WWII. There were many drivers that ran there who also were in the 500 every

year. It was a track built by an oil man specificly to feature midget racing.

My parents were in the stands for the July 4th race in 1939. It was my first time at

the races. During the night my mom put my dad's hand on here stomach and he felt

me kicking her like a dedicated race fan and I was born Aug 11th! I went there

several times in the late 40's at like 7-8-9 yrs old but still remember it. CBS bought

the property in the early 50's and built the CBS TV studio on the site.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The guys with the bucks ran

Offies, the rest tried to keep up with the Ford V-8 60 flathead.

Grove,

Thanks for posting these pages. I LOVE seeing how most people wore suits and a classy hat to races "back in the day".Lots of women wore dresses to races. Back when everyone was "classy"...I guess. Now, about everyone goes out of their way to look like the down trodden it seems.

Take Care

I believe I have seen these in the magazine you referred to and I'm going to try and find the magazine. I went to Gilmore as a child and I love this stuff. McDowell is on the pole and I believe Swede Lindskog is next to him. Perry Grimm is in the second row and Sam Hanks is outside of him. I think Danny Oakes is in the third row. The engine in McDowell's car is a Sowers. You said your dad built the car, did he also build the engine, and what is your name? Dan

I just found the magazine. It is the Saturday Evening Post from September 7, 1946. Dan
