Hall of Fame Vintage Classic Sat. nite at Manzanita Speedway
by Windy McDonald

(Sept. 20) There were no surprises in Saturday night’s Hall of Fame Vintage Classic as Manzanita Speedway with the exception of one of the fastest tracks this year. Jeremy Sherman scored his 11th American Sprint Car Series, Canyon Region, in a 30 lap main event that was only slowed once with 22 laps in the book when Thomas Ogle slammed the retaining wall on the 22nd lap. By that time several cars were a lap down and Sherman, who had built a straightaway advantage over the rest of the field. When the green flag flew so did Sherman who started eighth and took the lead from Jay Ervine on the 7th lap as he was consistently turning laps on the half mile track in the high 19 second bracket. Charles Davis, Jr. started tenth and moved into second on the 23rd lap but had nothing left for Sherman. Andy Reinbold came out of the fourth row for a strong third place finish. R.J. Johnson started ninth and early leader Jay Ervine was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Nathan High, Mile Leslie, Stevie Sussex, Bernie Smith and Mike Martin. With only one yellow and the high speed of Sherman’s Fred Bryan sprinter plus the driving of Sherman only ten of the 26 starters on the lead lap. Only 14 cars were still running on the final lap.

The feature got off to a shaky start when Garrett Hansen, the second ranked driver in the USAC/CRA standings, bicycled in the third turn on the first lap, slapped the wall and did a series of flips. He appeared to be okay but was taken to a nearby hospital for observation.

Sherman’s win was not only his 11th win in ASCS racing this year he also scored his 111th career win which leaves him only seven wins behind the legendary Lealand McSpadden on the total win list.

Sherman, who does not run trophy dashes, got his night off to a good start when he led the field in the first eight lap heat race to the finish line by leading all the way. Chris Bonneau was second ahead of Sussex. Martin was the speed demon in the second heat as he had the lead on the opening lap and pulled away from Tim Beal, Reinbold, and Aiuto. The final had the best passing as Hansen came out of the second row for the win with Ervine in second, Johnson third and Davis, up from eighth, in fourth.

Hansen was the high point driver and he rolled the traditional die and it came up ten. The top ten in points through the heat races drew for starting positions with Ervine on the pole and Bonneau on the outside. Sherman started sixth while Johnson and Davis were in the fifth row. Nathan High was the hard charger of the race with a run from 16th to sixth.

Kiley Fellers matched Sherman as he too scored his 11th win in the 20 lap mini sprint car feature on the one third mile track. Fellers took the lead from Kurt Stults on the 14th lap after starting eighth, the same starting spot that Sherman had in his win. Once out front Fellers was clocked in the mid fourteen second bracket and pulled away from Stults and Brandon George. Kyle Shipley, the defending champion finished fourth ahead of Paul Martin. Rounding out the top ten were Josh Shipley Justin Quinn, Mike Visser, Travis Keesler and Pat Wing.

Fellers added more points to his already huge points lead by winning the first heat race over George, K. Shipley and Tyler Keesler. The second heat went to Josh Castro who beat Martin, Quinn and Visser. The final heat was a shoot-out between the winner, Stults and his team mate Jeff Greszler. Third went to Travis Keesler with Katherine Aragon fourth.

Former champion Dustin Cormany beat the field in winning the four lap trophy dash.

Mark Julian led the first eight laps in the modlite 15 lap feature but fell to second when Brian King took over and led laps 9-13. Julian made a high side pass and led the final two laps for his first win on the Manzanita clay. King finished second and Steve Moriarity was third. Clayton Echols bummed a ride in the car assigned to Scott Gannett and came home in fourth ahead of Dallas Caldwell. The rest of the top ten, in order, were Chris Shafer, Mike Williams, Troy Korkosz, Tom Graham and Luke Merrifield.

Caldwell ran away from the field in the first heat race with Moriarity second and Tom Kuncis third. The second heat went to the pole sitter, Shafer who beat Williams and Nick Gann. The final heat was a tight battle which was an omen for the feature when Julian and King battled for the win with Julian prevailing. In third at the checkered flag was Hayden Bender.

The ASCS Southwest Region winged sprint cars will race on the half mile track next week with the ASCS Canyon Region cars will be on the short track.

Induction ceremonies for the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame were conducted during intermission. Jim McGee, the top crew chief in Indy Car racing, Conrad Murphy the top boat racer and builder of boats, Chauvin Emmons a member of the 300 M.P.H. club at the Bonneville Salt flats and a holder of many drag racing records. Bill Krug, winner of 12 championships in off road racing and Ralph Hertel who started short track stock car racing at Manzy and was a major sponsor joined the 72 previous inductees.
