REDMAN CLINCHES VENTURA RACEWAY MODIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP
by Lee Elder

VENTURA, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2008) – Ventura’s Damon Redman is a Ventura Raceway champion.

Redman, who has raced at the track for nearly 20 years, clinched the Raceway’s IMCA Modified championship Saturday when he started Saturday’s main event. He finished second in the race after starting in the third row.

“I wanted to win the race,” Redman said. “That’s what this is all about.”

The race went to Ojai’s Randy McGraw, his third win this year. The other winners included Bruce Douglas (VRA Senior Sprints), Nic Faas (USAC Midgets), Tyler Edwards (VRA Junior Focus Midgets), Jessica Clark (VRA Junior Midgets), Ricky Lewis (Mini Dwarf – Superchargers) and Zachery Gilmore (Mini Dwarf – Pistons).

Redman gave an emotional interview over the Raceway public address system after his heat race, but he was calm when his feature started. A caution period bunched the field with five laps remaining in the race. Redman charged but couldn’t catch the race leader.

Jack Parker, the two-time defending class champion, finished second in the standings.

Douglas, another Ventura racer, won for the fourth time this season. He and Chris Wakim waged a thrilling, two-car struggle in the sprint car feature.

“There’s nobody I’d rather race with than Chris Wakim,” Douglas said. “You’ve got to stay on it to stay ahead of Wakim.”

Wakim said, “I was just waiting for him to make a mistake and he did a great job.”

The Midget feature pitted two young chargers against each other at the front of the field: Faas of Huntington Beach and Stockton’s Johnathon Henry. Henry pressured Faas for much of the event before a mechanical failure forced him to retire from the event.

This means what? Ran a heat didn't start the main? Entered event but didn't show up to the track? Interesting stat.

Between the heat and main, a crack in the head was discovered which sidelined C.J. for the evening.

Ahhh, I'm used to seeing that stat as "DNS" Did Not Start.
