NCRA Modified Season Finale Canceled/Marc Hurd Champion
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 15, 2008 - Park City, Kansas - Due to a record number of rain outs at several tracks in which Speedways Inc. promote, officials with the O'Reilly/NCRA presented by ICM/Ethanol have announced that the scheduled season finale at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas for the modified division on October 4-5 has been canceled. Also, the tentatively schedule NCRA late model show for the track on October 25 has also be nixed. However, modifieds will still be in competition during the weekend, just without sanctioning from NCRA.
While several drivers still had a mathematical shot at the championship, this decision officially announces that Wichita, Kansas driver Marc Hurd as the 2008 O'Reilly/NCRA modified champion. He will be the first driver to dethrone five-time and defending division champion Brian Franz since the 2002 race season. A more detailed recap of the 2008 NCRA modified season and a career best effort for Marc Hurd is forthcoming.
Nineteen rain outs have plagued Speedways Inc. for the 2008 race season including three NCRA events (modified and sprint cars) at 81 Speedway and forced postponement of the 52nd Annual Hutchinson Nationals. Speedways Inc. also promotes Thursday and Saturday night shows at 81 Speedway where either rain or saturated grounds forced cancellation of events.
NCRA and 81 Speedways will still keep the regularly scheduled September 27 season finale for the series sprint car division in which Mike Peters leads C.J. Johnson by a mere 65 points for the points championship. The event will be held in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Bill Hall Memorial Vintage Meet, where close to one hundred vintage cars from the throughout the country will embark on the speedway for three days during the weekend.
NCRA is closing out its 38th consecutive season sanctioning races throughout the Great Plains region and will have completed 37 races in their sprint car, modified and late model rain-plauged season combined. Officials with the series are already making plans for the 2009 season their biggest in series history.
