WESTERN SPRINTS AT ALL-AMERICAN SPEEDWAY SATURDAY; HELBERG TAKES 50-LAPPER AT ALTAMONT
SEPTEMBER 15, 2008 --- Tanner Swanson of Kingsburg, Calif. has a 110-point lead over JoJo Helberg of Rohnert Park, Calif. entering this Saturday’s USAC Western Sprint race at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.
Helberg, however, gained the upper hand last Saturday night, winning the 50-lap feature at Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, Calif. while Swanson took third.
Helberg, who won the Rocky Mountain Sprint finale the previous week at Salt Lake City, Utah, took the lead when Eric Humphries encountered problems on lap 43. Helberg led the final eight laps in his ADTS/Barndt’s Welding Hansen/Chevy to beat Nick Green, point leader Swanson, Paul Zimmerly and Greg Anderson. Humphries had led the first 42 laps.
Swanson won the May race at Roseville and was fourth in the series opener there won by Shane Hmiel. In 12 appearances this year, Swanson has also been the fastest qualifier nine times, including last Saturday at Tracy.
