I'll chime in on this subject also. I'm sure I will get throttled for this but everyone is entitled to an opinion. I can remember the days of running the old car with the homebuilt 360 motor and the 16 square foot wing with the D3B McCreary tire at Knoxville. That was the best racing I have ever been involved in. You acyually had to drive the car, you weren't just guiding a frieght train! Will we ever get back to those days.......god I hope so and the 305 division is the place to do it. We have all seen the arguments on here about unhooking the 360/410 cars to make better racing and for those of you that don't think that would work.....all I can do is laugh....sorry if I upset you. Now keep in mind the midwest 305 cars are running the same wings as the 360/410 cars but hell....we are using softer tires than the 360/410 cars run at Kville. These cars are just flat to hooked up and glued to the race track with the 305 motor. So how do you make your frieght train faster than the other guys frieght train.....spend more money on the motor.....heck...they hardly tech anything anyway. So now for my two cents on the cure....UNHOOK the cars and it will self solve the motor issue. The 305's need the 16 square foot wing, narrower and harder right rear and left rear tires. Plain and simple, unhook the cars so that they get sideways and the driver actually has to drive the car instead of guide the car. I've heard the arguments..but we get our tires free from kville 410 guys or really cheap from them like $50.00 each. Then I think back about the old 360 days and remember buying two right rears and racing all year long on them. Treated or untreated them old bricks lasted forever! Racing was fun then, we were running three and four wide, sideways and having a ball!!! Now you get in, sit down ,strap in and guide your frieght train behind the faster frieght train. Bottom line-----unhook the cars and it will equal less expensive motors, better racing for the fans, and it will make better drivers out of the "young guns."

Now all we have to do is find someone with the "balls" to make this step in the right direction. And it sure has hell won't be Knoxville. They do not want to have to police rules. That is why their 305 rules are recommended rules. And their big cure for next year in the 305's is a $5000.00 long block claim. UNHOOK THE CARS AND PUT THE WORD FUN BACK INTO RACING

Attack me if you wish: Wayne Redmond

16 square wings? Rock hard tires? Drivers driving? C'mon Wayne, get real. That stuff will work, that's why it will never happen.

ok i do not race sprint cars. but have been involved with racing for 20 years now. everyone has great points. but here is the bottom line, continuing to use parts handed down from the "BIG LEAGUES" is just as cost effective as making people buy cheaper parts. 305's should look like their big brothers (or sisters), so keep the wings. Put the brick tire on the right rear, unhook the car some (remember the new guys, you don't want a caution everyother lap like hobby stocks).
Make the tech director tech the cars, if they don't care to do it maybe it's time to organize and police yourselves. Have fellow racers tech each other to keep it fair. Make sure that the heads follow the rules and limit rod length to 6". Maybe decide if a crank forged with knife edges and lightening holes is what the rules intended. Restricting compression will not save anymore or much more. Although it may be a good idea so racers wouldn't have to get a separate setup for the 305 Knoxville race. Motor claim is not the answer when your running for 300 bucks sorry it don't work unless people really claim ask the classes that allow it. The bottom line is, tech and tires figure that out the races will be much more competitive.

All of you have valid points.

I tried to read the whole post, I may have missed it but I haven't heard anyone looking at the biggest issue with a 305 class......Lack of FANS.

The fans will come to Knoxville to watch a 410s but when the 410s aren't in the pits the fans aren't in the stands...........seems like every non 410 show the stands are a quarter full at most, so how many fan are going to sit in the stands for a 305 show?

Smaller tracks might pull it off but I imagine the cost to put on a show at Knoxville just isn't going to work with 305s even with a smaller purse. Once or twice a year with another class maybe but as 25+ year Knoxville fan I just don't see the fans being behind the 305s.

I truly think 305s will grow as a group but not at Knoxville.

I'm a race fan....not just a 410 fan... I Own/Race a Micro Sprint...and enjoy watching anything with a motor race on dirt/pavement/water...oval/roadcourse/straightLine/figure8/motocross even remote control cars can help pass time when there just isn't anything else going on!

I truly think 305's are better suited for 1/4 mile to 3/8 mile tracks.

I think it is critical to the sport of sprint car racing, as for Knoxville raceway, that they need to add a class like the 305's. Heck next year it sounds like they may have at least 3 new 360 cars that were once 305's. I believe Tasker p, little McCarl, and Josh Paddelford (sp). That is even with Knoxville not even running those 305 on a regular basis. Just think how many new 360's they would get every year if they ran 305's weekly. Let's think about this Bill W. Knoxville had an abnormal amount of extra cars this year in the 410 class. The last few races, even with all of the extra 410's this year, the car count was well just point blank pathetic. I can assure you there will be a day that Tasker P, and little McCarl, and that Josh kid may very well want to run in the 410 class someday. In today's day and age, who can afford a Knoxville 360. If any track in the world can make a cheap entry level class work, it would be Knoxville Raceway. Like I said it is CRITICAL to get new blood in the sport. It is critical to get new fans in the stands. Let's say Knoxville added the 305's. Let's say they get 25 cars every night. On average a car has what 3-5 guys on a crew? so that would be $1500 more money from pit passes a night. An average a car brings how many fans, friends, sponsors, into the grandstands? Well that I have no clue, I am sure it varies. If anything you will get new drivers, and there friends will maybe come and watch them, and they would be like holy crap, this Knoxville raceway is amazing, then they chirp to there friends and so on. It could only better our sport. These are just some of my thoughts.

No division anywhere can totally prevent overspending. You ban one thing, they will always find something else to spend $$ on.

Austin McCarl is running a 360 this year and wasn't at Knoxville because he is to young, He will be old enough next year.

Just my opinion, but I really think if you ask most regular fans at knoxville they could care less about 305s, Its hard enough to get fans in the stands for 360's.

Some of the best racing of the year happens at the 360 Nationals yet the stands are half full at most.

I myself wouldn't mind if they added them on weekly basis.

You need to look at the 2009 schedule closer. There are some lower cost racing on it. Look at the first week of July.

The IMCA races are now there because the track made a KILLING off of pit passes due to 183 cars in the infield that night.

I really hope Knoxville makes the 305 class a weekly series. Then we can watch John Kearney come back full time and outspend another class of beginners to feed his ego!!!

Well it sounds like Kearney is done after 305 nationals..and for good this time..not like the previous 3 times that he has retired. he'll definately be missed out there cause he don't have many rivals
