Brian Brown – Racing in the Valley!
(Bill W) September 3, 2008 – At one point this season, Brian Brown was buried pretty deep in the Knoxville Raceway point standings. A surge in the second half saw better performances, and Brian ascended in the point standings. He climbed on more rung on the ladder last Saturday night, and ended the season a respectable fourth. Another busy weekend of racing is planned in the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21, including an event in his hometown, Grain Valley, Missouri. There, he will attempt to defend his win there one year ago, and become the 2008 "Kansas City King of the Wings"!
A good qualifying week at Knoxville on August 23, was followed up last Saturday with a familiar refrain. Brian timed in 15th on the field. "We were a couple of tenths off in qualifying, and unfortunately, that's been the norm this year," he says. A second place heat finish qualified him for the 25-lap main event on Season Championship Night.
The 2007 track champion started 14th in the feature field, and quickly charged towards the front. "We were up to seventh, and got to racing with Bronson Maeschen quite a bit," says Brian. "We may have had a top five car…we let (Don) Droud get away from us a little bit too there the last five laps."
With two laps to go, Billy Alley got upside down in turn one. After slowing to a stop for the red, Brian was hit from behind. "I saw the red out coming across, and I don't know if Justin (Henderson) didn't see it or what, but he got into the back of us," says Brian. "That's how he (Henderson) got upside down. It didn't do anything to the car to slow us down."
The last two laps saw Brian settle for seventh at the checkers. "It was a tough year for us, but we'll move forward," he says. "We did get up to fourth in the points by the end (after being as far back as 13th), so that was one of our mid-season goals we had set. It just seemed like an uphill battle all year long, whether it was racing or with the points. We started in the back every week it seemed, and I don't know how many cars we passed, but I'm sure it was more than anyone else."
The Lake Ozark Speedway Nationals finale was Sunday, and the team tried their luck in running for the $3,000 top prize. That essentially went out the window after the draw. "My lucky draw person drew a 75 out of a 75," says Brian. "That put us in the back of the heat, and with the format the way they have it, you pretty much have to win the heat to have a chance."
Despite starting dead last in his heat (11th) and running up to fourth, that wasn't enough for a feature transfer. The format transferred the top three finishers in the heats to the feature. "(Track Owner) Kevin Gundaker and his staff do a great job with that event, but I'd like to see a guy rewarded for coming from 11th to 4th in a heat in a 'nationals' race like that," explains Brian. "Maybe in the future they can look at something like that. I'm fine with that WOW format most nights, but when there are 40+ cars, it's tough when you draw poorly. A guy who starts on the pole and runs third in the heat is in better shape than a guy going from 11th to 4th. I don't think that's right in a big event like that."
Brian did transfer to the A by winning the B main, and started 17th. He put on another charge, but pulled off later in the event. "We got as far up as 10th before the engine started warming up," he says. "Sixth paid the same as 20th, so we pulled it in…we'll get it ready for this weekend."
Coming Home
It's looking like a two-race weekend for Brian. On Saturday, he'll get an opportunity to race right in Grain Valley. He'll attempt to win for the second September in a row there, and is also assisting with the promotion of the "Kansas City King of the Wings" event featuring 360 sprints and midgets racing for $1200 to win plus 305 sprints. "I'm looking forward to returning to the Valley Speedway," he says. "I've only got to race there the one time and it went well. I hope we get some great weather, and have a lot of people having some fun out there!" Sunday, Brian is tentatively planning on racing at the Nebraska Cup at the Eagle Raceway.

Brian's Q&A
Bill W asks: You have a hand in promoting this Saturday's events at the Valley Speedway. What have you learned about promoting?
Brian answers: I'm a big sprint car fan that's had an opportunity to drive. Anything I can do to help promote a race and make it fun for the fans, I'll do. My friend, Scott Pennington, is promoting this deal, so I wanted to give him all the help I can. I'm just assisting. We'll just try to make it a good show that gets over at a decent time. I think the fans will enjoy the openwheel tripleheader with the 360 sprints, midgets, and 305 sprints.

Brown's Bits
On this date in 2006, Brian won the LOS 360 Nationals. Brian survived early contact with another competitor, replaced his top wing and surged from his third row starting spot to take the lead from Bobby Hawks on a lap eight restart. On lap 20, Jesse Hockett got into the mix, and slid past Brian for the lead. A restart on lap 24, provide Brian the opportunity to slide back past Hockett and fend him off for the win. Hawks was third, ahead of Robbie Standridge and 20th starting Foster Landon.
