Phil Hill the only driver born in the USA to ever win the formula 1 championship died Thursday. Phil was raised in Santa Monica and won the first race he ever entered and that was at the old Carrell speedway.

I met and talked to Phil Hill one time. He was a gentlemen in every sense of the definition.
RIP Phil.

Although he wasn't basically a circle track or dirt guy by the mid 'fifties, Hill came from racing on dirt or rough macadam road courses like Agoura Park and Paramount Ranch when "sports cars" were a lot closer to "hot rods." Hill really stood at the pinnacle of Southern California racing by the late fifties and early sixties. He won Le Mans, the Argentine 1000km (much of it on dirt roads) and Sebring three times for Ferrari. His racing record (see http://www.philhill.com/phil_hill_race_record.html ) in the pre-roll-bar, pre-fire-suit era is astounding. Like Richard the Gasman, Leland the berm rider, Jimmy Oskie and Shoe, the guy could bring them home when they were running ragged and falling apart. See also http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/phil-hill-american-racing-champion-is-dead/?hp and look at all the comments below the story.
