Yeah that really sucks the big one there. On the other hand, if your deal is destruction and meaningless entertainment you should attend these events. It really don't take alot to amuse small minds, does it?

It's unfortunate that we could not attract enough ticket buyers for the Dirt Track Motorcycle races or the Stadium Cross races at the Grandstands, especially at $35 per seat. . Perhaps the market in OKC has changed dramatically over the past 10 years.

I recall when there were 8,000 people watching the motorcycle dirttrack races at State Fair Speedway.

I believe I'll pass. I would much rather see more TNT or an NCRA race come to the SFS. JMO

All dirt track motorcycle events I went to @ SFS were always Sro,along with some of the best racing ever at that track. It would be nice to see more shows like those again.

Not only do I remember, but I still have a program from those days. My father was close with the Nix family and we always attended the AMA races during that era. It was great racing and it's too bad that others on this board did not get a chance to see this type of racing. It was side-by-side racing and it was topless!

My thoughts:

For quality flat track motorcycle racing you need a big half-mile. Hmmm....That ain't gonna happen ever again.

Extreme cage fighting? Apparently nobody remembers when we tried female mud wrestling. If I remember correctly, Shane Carson (co-promoter) ended up in the ring.

Some of the best racing events ever at the fairgrounds occured during the fair. My earliest memories of fair racing include seeing Ernie Derr in late models and Bill Thrasher winning in a super.

State fair racing was the BEST.

Racing during the fair, wasn't nothing better. Just a different atmosphere that started with Bobo the clown before you walked up to the gate. Back before the "dogooders" got offended and Bobo is now not the same.

I remember my first fair in 1982. I hadn't gone since 1977 as my dad was put out with the strike year (for whatever reason) and we found 89er baseball. Anyhoot, I went to the fair that year and was hooked into racing once more.

The pits in on the quarter mile with racing on the half mile. Late models, champ dirt cars, modifids, you name it - it raced there. We would be invaded by Tulsa and Kansas with drivers and, as I stated, just a different atmosphere all together.

How I miss the dashing out of the stands during a small break to the pork chop sandwich stand and to the A&W Rootbeer stand for my jug.

Yet another of the days gone by that won't be back.

The year I'm thinking of , he wiped out coming out of 4 , but picked it up and kept hauling azz. Think he woulda won, except....... course thats what everybody says.

The Times They are a Changin'

Tulsa builds an 18,000 seat arena with a floor space the size of a Hockey Rink. First concert sells out in a mere 45 minutes, so they book an additional concert featuring the same group "The Eagles" two months later. Tickets for show #1 were selling online for as high as $1,350.00, most seats in the nose bleed section were going for $350.00 each.

Didn't The Eagles play the Zoo Amphitheater in OKC last year?

Can't remember the last time any venue in Tulsa sold out a show.

Could the answer be as simple as talking the tax payers into constructing a new racetrack that costs upwards of $158,000,000, and selling tickets for $100+ for the seats? Based on the age of The Eagles Band, and their hit song Hotel California Circa 1976, one would think Super Modifides may make a comback.

The only reason I would goto the fair was because of the races. I remember buying pit passes for the races only to get into the fair b/c the pit passes were almost cheaper. You could get a race and then get into the fair for free.

If I am not mistaken both Bobby Allen and Johnny Herrea showed up at fair races when the NCRA had the 410's running.

AMP I dont believe we need another track.Fairgrounds Speedway could be renovated and be the best track in the southwest again,IF our so called special interests city civic leaders and state clowns would ever see fit.

Not another new arena is what many folks in Tulsa thought as well. But the powers in charge got the 158 million dollar project pushed through.

We don't even have a large racetrack any longer. Tulsa Speedway in North Tulsa has been closed for a few years now, and the track at the Fairgrounds was converted into a Sand Trap with Asphalt Parking in the infield and a giant sign for horse racing that blocks the view of the back straight.

Just saying, if a new or otherwise revised version of any track is built using 158 million dollars, one may see the Young Professionals begging to obtain one of the new $40,000 per season suites, or perhaps buy the $350 tickets to attend. Mid Size Companies would flock to own a box for entertaining their clients. Of course a large portion of the seating area would need to be airconditioned and out of the noise and pollution of the vehicles. Another section would be a patio area with comfortable covered area using lots of manicured grass surrounding concrete walks and picnic tables. A fine mist of water to keep the guests cooled down on a hot summer night.

General admission for the minions would consist of padded concert hall type seating with ushers and beverages/food brought to the ends of the isles.

Worked for the new ballpark in their downtown location didn't it?

my nephew has seen bout 100-150 races in his short 9 years ------ but i remember his first like yesterday. ncra sprints and mods at sfs. stanley reed killed it in the mods - i think danny jennings win the sprints. i remember they had a lot of cars -------- and if i remember correctly - it was the last race held on the half mile.

funny ------- i remember everything about that day. it was his first time to feel butteflies - on that big ol blue slide that used to sit outside year round. his first ride ---- a motorcylce carousel. won his first prize there that day. and it was also his first time to the fair - and it was also my last. thats the last damn thing i'll support in the world . when the same people who preside over the fairgrounds make some sort of lengthy commitment to the track - and tend to the details of it like any good owner does for his property ------ i'll go multiple times and take as many people as i can with me. but i aint really heard anything about that. hell the last thing i heard was -------- offseason or last year dont remember ------- that they were going to pretty much investigate the structural soundness of the grandstand - something like that. and not to be a naysayer or doomsday type, but that did not sound that great. kinda sounded like an excuse to move forward with a potential excuse to be used someday or something. well i guess we hope for the best............as long as the races stay good and the place turns a profit - thats a lot to be positive about. better than nothing.

btw - does anyone even know for sure - officially - how much longer lanny has a lease for the track. or any stuff like that - or what the board has commented on after that time? i just wander ------- never hear anything about it..............

Don't bet on the profit part being better than nothing. Tulsa Fair Grounds evicted Bell's Amusement Park, which was a tennent since 1951. After giving the owners a very short notice, the Fair Board came in with bull dozers and demolished what the folks that owned that businesses and had worked for all their lives had left as they ran out of time to move it all.

And what was built in that same location after the Amusement Park was demolished?

A Parking Lot ? ? ? ? ?

man thats shit. really sucks.

the first year i went to the chili bowl - - jan 07 - it was there -------- this year chili bowl in jan. - it wasnt there ---------- thats about all i knew about it.

on what grounds did the fair board do what they did? i mean - thats so shitty against the bell owners - unless it was an imminent domain or some sort of standard or code violation ------- the owners maybe could have done somthin in court.......
