When you look at the NCRA's history, which by the way predates WoO and the All Stars, it started out with 305 engines (302 Chevys and Fords) AND some straight line 6 bangers DID compete with them. So yeah, maybe we are going back to the good old days!
I watched 305 sprints a couple of years ago for the first time at K-C Raceway in Ohio as a companion show to Ohio Sprint Weeks. They weren't a bad show, even on a 3/8 mile.
What I don't understand, as I look at 305 rules around the country, is why, if your trying to save a guy some money, do you put injectors on a 305? You can get all the fuel you need thru a 500 cfm Holley. Also, why do some insist on putting tall tires and/or 5x5 wings on them? A 305 cubic inches will struggle to pull the big wing and the tall tire. Nobody is running anyone's pull off tires, so don't kid yourself the way the Fairgrounds did when we had to run the same Goodyear 31.5s or McCreary 32s that the 1/2milers ran.
I'd like to see a 305 class IF it had tires, wing and fuel system to match the smaller engine.

So you have been to K-C Raceway. Nice high banked 3/8. I always try to catch a race or two there every year. I was born about 5 miles down the road in Chillicothe

I don't have a regular track function. I help out a few people in the racing circles from time to time. Otherwise, I'm just a long time fan of the sport. I once was a staff writer for both the Tulsa Speedway and SFS back in the 80's. Lived out west for a spell where I got close to the racing clan out there.

easy on the sprint cars there buddy...........lol
but that is off what KOP said ------- 410's to 360's ---- prob a smart thing - KOP you see any 410's around here anymore? besides ----- the NCRA Sprint division in the best sprint car series in the OK,TX,KS area. they are doing more with less. there are more sprints in the texas and oklahoma areas (360's) - but yet NCRA in kansas gets as good and better car count in the sprints than the others -------- it is a racers series -------- as evidenced by them upping the purse. they pay double to start a feature than any ascs region................
and i havent touched base on the great shows the mods and late models put on. if you want 410's follow the World of Outlaw circus. they have their 17 regs ------- but when they get outside of Ohio or PA or Knoxville -------- those other 7-8 cars in the field --------- what kind of motors do you think they are runnin? I'll give you a clue since you obviously need one --------- they aint 410's..............
NCRA is damn smart to make all the moves they have made - and the ones they are going to make too. what the hell you go and do KOP? get caught up in the 2 piddly ass All Star races they had in Kansas? ---------- while that was going on ---------- at Knoxville we were watching 110+ 360 sprints. prob for the same price or less too................

Wow your nerve get pinched there OKC? You OK? You sound pretty ticked. My 2 cents was all about by belief that having the NCRA add 305 sprints is just taking a step backwards. Race fans are NOT going to be drawn to the track because a promoter is offering 305 sprints. If you like them, all the power to you. Hope you enjoy them. Some people like softball over baseball. To each their own as they say.
Lets clarify something here, I want the NCRA to prosper and succeed. I just wish it was by putting more effort into expanding and improving their existing sprint class. A class of sprints that's more likely to sell a ticket. There are some good drivers and dedicated car owners that run with NCRA. They are to applauded for their efforts.
Can't help but wonder: Is the NCRA really trying to better sprint car racing by adding 305's or......... are they just after the $$$$ for the cars that are running with another group?

I loved it, and not just because it got me out of spending time with my in-laws at a July 4th wedding (although that helped.)
I love most any track where the locals embrace the track and sport (like Belleville and Knoxville) and aren't embarrassed that the horsepower doesn't actually involve horses.
Ohio and Indiana have such awesome small town tracks. I just love to drive thru town and SEE the presence of auto racing at the local businesses (like I often see in Elk City!)

I've seen the SST twice at Ardmore, sorry i was not impressed, maybe if they didn't run wings it would be better. They just go into the turns, no turning sideways. Isn"t that what sprint cars are all about ? Not trying to piss anyone off but I don"t think NCRA has run much in Texas in a while. I remember the beginning of the NCRA when the races were called The Nationals on Sundays time trials were in the afternoon and they were free with races being that night. I think some are being kinda hard on Kop. Saying that I will probably get bombed.

Not sure why the comments about the late models and modifieds you all made as I was addressing "sprint cars". That was the thread topic wasn't it? Sprint cars? I didn't utter a word about door slammers. Sorry, no offense LOL
Point was that the NCRA has unfortunately lost it's status over the years as a "quality" sprint car organization. If one thinks starting a 305 sprint class is going to get fans all excited and attend the races in bigger numbers, guess again. Hell, a 305 is nothing but a tick over a 283!
I can hear the advertisement now......" Come see 305 sprint cars do 0-80 mph in a week and a half." I would rather see NCRA put more focus in trying to improve the sprint class they already have, not dilly dally with the SLOWEST sprint class out there.
As for the comment: " a sanctioning body that has probably been around longer than you been alive." Guess again. Hate to admit it, but I'm older than the NCRA.
As more the comment: "Just saw their sprint show in KS last weekend and those cars would be very competitive in the ASCS Sooner region." On a good night, maybe. To win races over an ASCS car, not likely.
Here is the order of sprint cars in terms of their strength of power:
1) 410 ci
2) 360 ci / ASCS configuration
3) 360 ci / Powered down from ASCS specs (Multiple sanctions incl. NCRA)
4) 305 ci
You see some of the nations top marquee drivers run the top 2 classes. You will hardly find them run the bottom 2. Note I said 'hardly' not never.
|
First off I believe that NCRA is now on full ASCS rules.
Second, I believe that hardly is a poor choice of words. Just because a place doesn't run ASCS rules they don't get recognition? At the SFS we run a "variation" of ASCS rules with a spec head and flat tops with a little wing. But I guess drivers like Danny Jennings, Mike Peters, Larry Neighbors, Darren Stewart, Joe Wood Jr., and Robert Sellers are a "hardly" good enough driver to win multiple ASCS shows. What about Mike Goodman? He used to "hardly" run with the gumout series. Do you want to know the best part? None of these guys have even won a championship in the last 3 or 4 years. Maybe the competition can "hardly" keep up with them huh?
By the way I'm not mad, you didn't hit a cord. I'm all about a little debate.
And 305's with big wings are boring. I know that they put just as much into them as we do into ours, but they just aren't fun to watch. (Almost as bad as a mod )
Love forever and always,
Brandon Jennings

well actually i agree with you dude.
im all for whats best for the drivers. but honestly i'm not sure 305's are best for fans either. they need to be faster. the one time i saw them at grayson county -------- they did suck balls.
yeah i hope ncra does continue to focus and invest in their main mod and 360 sprint classes.

First off, half of you don't even know what your talking about. The NCRA hasn't even begun it's 305 class yet. Thats next year to go along with the already URSS 305 Sprint Class which is growing extremely fast. Sure.. the 305's aren't as quick as 360's or 410's. The main concept of building a 305 class is for affordability. Their motors are lasting the whole year on most occasssions and they are getting close to hitting 500 horsepower.. alot more than when it first started. That isn't much away from some of the 360's. I've been to races that allows 305's to run with 360's, and I've seen some of them put up a good fight with some of the 360's. Their putting lots of fans in the stands, and they put on a hell of a show. Just ask Jon Johnson Also, because good ole C Ray didn't like the fact that this 305 class was building so quickly and gaining popularity, he cancelled all classes around here for the rest of the year. Thats BS in my opinion. So where I'm from the only sprints I get to watch are the 305's and all the local tracks love them as well as the fans. They are keeping racing alive here in the heartland.

I have been to a lot of URSS 305 races and they are a lot of fun to watch. Just hope the NCRA deal doesn't ruin the URSS. The URSS is a great organization. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens next season. LETS GO RACIN!!

Head rule is the biggest difference and I would imagine there are other rules that differ too, NCRA is suppose to run Racesaver Spec Alum. Head , URSS runs a Steel heads, heck I would rather them take the Wings off and run the 305 class , be great deal then.

Smiley does not advertise that they are 305's and he also tries to go to tracks that don't normally see sprint cars. His tour was featured in flat out magazine last month and he said he kinda scolds the guys who mention them being a 305. Sure if the 305's came to SFS we would be like "what the hell is this?" But for small town Texas areas it would be like the damn outlaws!

URSS runs a 5x3 wing just like the city. Smiley's runs 5x5 wings. All you guys talking this crap about taking wings off is killing me. Guess I can come live with you while I am unemployed???

Sorry David but you can't come and live with me lol. Although, I think a good non-wing class would be a good thing in this region.

Actually I would have to crawl my fat a@@ up on the roofs and do copper if it wasn't for the wings. So we need to keep them even though it is better racing.
