AFTER NIGHT NINE, WAYNE JOHNSON CLINCHES "MR. SPRINT CAR" TITLE BY TOPPING COX DESIGN IOWA SPEEDWEEK POINTS
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (August 9, 2008) - Wayne Johnson, originally of Oklahoma and now calling Knoxville home, has clinched his second "Mr. Sprint Car" title by outdistancing all other drivers this week in the Cox Design Iowa Speedweek point standings. Going into tonight's 48th annual Super Clean Knoxville Nationals finale, presented by Lucas Oil, Johnson has locked up the title by virtue of his championship A-Main starting berth. Neither Billy Alley, Brooke Tatnell, nor Tyler Walker, all of whom are also in the championship finale tonight, will be able to mathematically catch Wayne Johnson in the final point standings as long as the Knoxville 360 Nationals champion starts the Knoxville 410 Nationals feature race.
The unofficial top ten in the Cox Design Iowa Speedweek points after nine nights are as follows: 1., Wayne Johnson, 279 points; 2., Billy Alley, 237 points; 3., Brooke Tatnell & Tyler Walker, 232 points; 5., Jason Johnson, 223 points; 6., Jesse Hockett, 210 points; 7., Brian Brown, 202 points; 8., Bronson Maeschen, 184 points; 9., Travis Rilat, 176 points; 10., Jason Solwold, 173 points.
The Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Iowa Speedweek includes ten straight nights of sprint car racing between Knoxville Raceway and the Southern Iowa Speedway. The top three places pay $2,500, $1,000, and $500, respectively. Past "Mr. Sprint Car" titlists include Ricky Logan (2002) of Arkansas, Shane Stewart (2003, '04) of Oklahoma, Billy Alley (2005) of Nebraska, Jason Johnson (2006) of Louisiana, and Wayne Johnson (2007) of Oklahoma.
