Geving maintains sixth place position in Civil War points following round 10; Calistoga half mile up next

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (8-3-08) – Despite a challenging night of racing at Placerville Speedway Saturday night, Penngrove’s Alissa Geving maintained her sixth place status in the current Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Point Standings. Geving has increased her point advantage over fellow rookie of the year contender and friendly rival Myles Bishop of Escalon to a total of 45-points heading into the 11th segment of the 15-race series this Saturday night.

This Saturday, Geving will be driving her Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Pit Stop USA, Auto Repairs Unlimited, Tillett Tool sponsored #3x Maxim Sprint Car in her own backyard once again. Geving will not be gassing it at Petaluma, nor in the yard of her home in Penngrove, but nearby at the famed half mile Calistoga Speedway for the Napa Valley Challenge. Nestled in the heart of the Napa wine country on the Napa County Fairgrounds, Calistoga Speedway is California’s largest and most intimidating dirt tracks. At the same time, the venue takes place in one of the most beautiful settings. Nestled in the shadows of MountSaint Helena with views of the rolling hills in nearly all directions, Calistoga Speedway is the one facility that makes sprint car racing fall under the irregular categories of breathtaking, romantic and spectacular.

“I love going to Calistoga, it is so beautiful there and so close to home,” said 16-year-old Geving. “The racing is incredible there. We are going twice as fast as we normally do. It’s scary and a bit intimidating but I hear it’s that way for even the veteran drivers. It’s a place I all of us as drivers really have to respect for both its history and its danger.”

In this event last season, Geving made her first ever appearance at Calistoga Speedway. It was on that warm summer night in 2007 that the 15-year-old lady from the small town of Penngrove that seems just like the typical “girl next door” in everyday conversation made a statement to the California sprint car population. That night the third generation racer and daughter of multiple Petaluma Champion Gary Geving qualified in 10th place, finished 5th in her preliminary heat race and then charged her way into the A-feature after driving from fourth place into first. In the A-feature Geving literally drove the tires off her car, starting 11th and finishing 9th in her first ever appearance at “California’s big one.” Earlier this season Geving was running strong in the A-feature at Calistoga until a crash in lapped traffic along with Bishop finished the night for both drivers and placed her 21st in the results.

“I learned all about Calistoga and saving your tires that night,” said Geving. “By the end of the race I had nothing to work with, nothing. This week I’ll work on saving my tire and try my best to get in the feature and earn a top finish. After last week this team really needs a strong night.”

Last Saturday, challenging track conditions took its toll on Geving at Placerville Speedway. Her night concluded with a 15th place finish in the B-feature. On this same night, Bishop, her closest contender for the series rookie honors, too had his share of misfortune with and 8th place finish in the feature, contributing to the difference in points between Geving and himself.

Saturday’s event will mark the final regular season event for the Civil War Series prior to the annual Pacific Sprint Cup that opens the Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico on September 3rd. This event is open to just the top 32 drivers in the point standings of the Civil War Series. Geving is undoubtedly locked into the “crown jewel” of the series and looks forward to it already.

“I love racing at Chico, I miss racing there on Friday nights since we lost our 410 motor,” she added. “I’m looking forward the Wednesday night show and the rest of the Gold Cup weekend as well.”

Alissa Gevings’ title sponsors include Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Tillett Tool and Auto Repairs Unlimited. Additional sponsors include Flowmaster, A1A Performance Muffler, Parker Stores, Kalembas Tire Center, Rossi Auto Body, Afex Graphics, ALC Machine ,21st Century Health Club, Butler Specialties, Vanlare Steering Repair, Jeremy’s Chair Repair, Hose Doctor, Fast Lube Plus ALC Machine and Butler Built Safety Seats.
