FREMONT, Ohio - The traditional sprint cars - the fire-breathing, mud-slinging brand WITHOUT a wing - will once again roar around Fremont Speedway as "The Track That Action Built" is extending its season to include this special event on Saturday, Sept. 27.
The 410 non-wing sprints will run a 30 lap feature paying $3,000 to win ($250 to start).
To add to the excitement, the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints will also take the wings off for the first time in their history at Fremont Speedway.
"Many of the 305 drivers had approached us about wanting to take the wings off. We asked for a poll at a drivers' meeting and an overwhelming majority said they wanted to do it. The fans have been clamoring for a non-wing race at Fremont...it's been like six years since USAC came here," said Fremont Speedway Co-Promoter Rich Farmer. "So we said 'why not give everyone an exciting show' so we came up with this non-wing spectacular."
"With all the rainouts, we just didn't want to end the season on Sept. 20. So we've added a non-wing date at the end and we're really excited about it," said Andy James, Fremont Speedway Co-Promoter.
Farmer said plans are in the works to have a practice day at Fremont Speedway for teams to get the feeling for racing without that big wing.
"We hope this can become a yearly event. I think the fans will really take to the look and excitement of the sprint cars backing it in at the flag stand and throwing the clay," added Farmer.
