Kings Speedway Aug 2nd a Salute to the legend Al Pombo

Salute to Al PomboSaturday, August 2

Salute to Al Pombo
Come on out to Kings Speedway this Saturday night Aug. 2nd to salute the legend him self Al (Mombo) Pombo, and other drivers from the past to help honor the legend.

And also that night helping on the microphone will be another legend Kenny Takeuchi the best announcer of all time

Al Pombo was the first six time champion at the old Tully Road oval. His blue number circle three was a fixture at the track throughout the Sixties, as he powered his way to 104 main event victories. Pombo proved that this was no fluke as he also captured ten Kearney Bowl titles at Fresno, six track championships at Clovis, and six California State Championships, all against some top-notch drivers. Al started driving jalopies in 1948 and drove his final race in 1976, although he basically quit in 1972. He also had the opportunity to drive midgets and champ cars, but stayed with the supers. Al Pombo's Circle Three was the first number ever to be retired by the San Jose Speedway, that coming in 1995 . Al seemingly has the same penchant for picking up Hall of Fame honors as he did for first place finishes, as he is in the Merced Hall of Fame, the Fresno Sports Hall of Fame, and the Motor Sports Press Association Hall of Fame. No one could ever be more deserving than Al Pombo. Al still calls Fresno his home, and runs a tune-up shop there.

Kenny Takeuchi was one of the finest announcers ever to grace any racetrack. But he was much more than that. He was a statistician, a reporter, a columnist, and a darn good guy. Kenny uncovered more information about drivers and car owners and would share it with the crowd than anyone before him, making him the prototype of announcers. Mr. Smith, as he is sometimes called, also worked as the voice of Kearney Bowl, Clovis, and, until recently, Mad era. Still living in Fresno, Kenny keeps busy playing golf and staging marathons.
