Placerville goes dark and “Dilly Bar Night” draws Wiesz and Taylor to Marysville for cameo appearance

By Bill Sullivan

MARYSVILLE, CA (7-26-08) – With Placerville Speedway dark for the evening on Saturday, July 26th, the John Taylor Motorsports sprint car team and driver Colby Wiesz ventured to the likes of Marysville Raceway Park to compete in the 17th championship point race bannered as “Dairy Queen Dilly Bar” night at the quarter-mile dirt track located in Marysville. Committed to the 2008 Placerville Speedway championship campaign, Wiesz and car owner John Taylor enjoyed a night of low pressure racing at the track where Wiesz once dominated championship titles early in his career.

“We’re not in the point chase for the Civil War this year and were in pretty good shape to make the invitational show in Chico,” explained Taylor. “We didn’t want to make the long haul to Petaluma so we took a trip to Marysville to check out the improvements and get Colby plenty of seat time before the Civil War back at Placerville this week.”

For Taylor and Wiesz, the cameo appearance was far from a real “dilly” but it definitely paid off as it was discovered during hot laps that the water pump had failed on the M&M Structures, Thompson’s Auto Centers, Performance Plus Carpet Care #35 JEI sprint car. The complication was discovered when the Borello Race Engines power plant overheated.

“I wasn’t really set on racing this weekend, Colby wanted to go back to his old track so we did,” added Taylor. “Now I was glad we did. Otherwise this may not have surfaced until we got to Placerville for the Civil War this week.”

Due to the needed repairs, Wiesz was unable to participate in qualifying but was confident of making the A-feature as only 15-cars qualified for the evening. In the second heat race of the evening, Wiesz started in the seventh position and finished fifth in the eight lap event.

When the 25-lap feature event rolled to the track, Wiesz took the green flag in the eight place starting position and quickly began charging his way to the front on the track he once owned in the way of weekly domination. As early as the third lap, Wiesz had worked his way up to the fourth position and one later was working on a top three status when he drifted off the challenging surface in turns three and four. The excursion caused no damage to Wiesz’s sprint car but set him back deep in the field.

With eight laps complete in the race, Wiesz rallied back into the top five positions. During the final laps he raced in the wake of track regular Brett Dothage who won the event followed by Jeremy Burt, Burt Foland Jr. and Shawn Amos. Wiesz finished in fifth place, 5.311 seconds from the leader.

This Saturday, Wiesz and the JTM Motorsports team return to the track they call home, Placerville Speedway, to compete with Northern California’s best drivers as the boys and girls of the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series roll into El Dorado County for the 10th round of the 15 race series that competes at six different Northern California tracks.

In the Civil War Series point standings, Wiesz ranks 10th overall in seven starts. He has two top ten finishes and a single heat race victory. Wiesz will be looking for his first Civil War victory of the season this weekend and Placerville would surely be the ideal stage to perform the act. In the current Hoosier Racing Tires-Coors Light-Arnolds for Awards championship series, Wiesz has been the driver to beat at Placerville Speedway.

In the 11 races that have taken place at Placerville Speedway, Wiesz has finished in the top five in all but one event. He has four victories in feature event competition and solo victories in semi-main event features and heat race competition. Additionally, Wiesz has claimed two fast time awards in 2008. When the weekly championship series returns to Placerville in two weeks, Wiesz will continue to drive his way to his first Placerville Speedway title and the third consecutive title for Taylor as a car owner.

Colby Wiesz and John Taylor Motorsports Marketing partners for 2008 include M&M Structures; Thompson’s Auto & Truck Centers; DSR Graphic’s and Signs; Rowes Auto Body; Ervin Sales Group; PT Shocks; Performance Plus Carpet Care; A.R.T. Enterprises; Joe Hunt Magnetos; JB Enterprises; and Tony Borello Racing Engines.
