The latest from Gary Gerould's fine reporter/announcer/son:

By Bobby Gerould - ...The latest news from Calistoga has all kinds of periphery events surrounding the Louis Vermeil Classic August 30-31, 2008. The biggest part of the deal is the racing - given it will be the first non-wing sprint car races at the half-mile dirt track since September 28, 1985. Also on the card are the USAC Western Midgets. The return to the Louis Vermeil Classic name is a good thing. Without the pioneering Vermeil it is likely we wouldn't even know what a sprint car is in Northern California. The Vermeil Family is involved in the weekend - with Lou's son Dick making a guest appearance. Dick Vermeil was born in Calistoga. Of course he is best known for coaching the 1999 Super Bowl winning team. On Saturday afternoon at 1 PM - a wine tasting and bench racing event is planned featuring Dick Vermeil plus Sprint Car Hall of Famer LeRoy VanConett, and Calistoga Speedway heroes such as Billy Anderson, and Rendy Boldrini. As for drivers in competition - we hear that Midwest pilots such as Daron Clayton, and Jesse Hockett are confirmed. Clayton is always worth the price of admission alone. The Southern California contingent will be lead by Cory Kruseman, Mike Spencer, and Rip Williams. Nor-Cal figures to be repped by any number of the Kaeding men, Andy Forsberg, Johnny Rodriguez, and Damion Gardner. I haven't looked more forward to a non-wing sprint car race than this since the Mopar Million at Eldora a few years back. Get your tickets for just $25 (adults) (916) 863-7223. Tell `em HammerDownUSA.com sent you.

Damn, I've got goosebumps already, and it's still over a month away! I'm with you Bob, I haven't looked forward to a race as much as this one since the old "Copper World", Manzy doubleheader weekends back in the late 80's - early 90's down in Phoenix! This is definitely my race of the year for sure! WOO HOO!

SUPPORT WILDLIFE, go to a sprint car race!

I talked to Tommy Hunt this past weekend and he seemed both nervous an excited at the same time. They really want this to be a success and see it grow into something really big. I for one am hoping they have a huge success and continue this races on this weekend for years to come. Maybe even making it a national event eventually.

How cool is it that NorCal has two weekends in a row of great racing. This followed by the Gold Cup. Get the USAC guys to race on Monday at Tulare and and what a week you would have.

A race at Tulare on Monday would be perfect. Maybe next year it can be worked out. The week of the USAC/CRA race on Saturday and Sunday, August (8-30,31) is preceded by the prestigous Johnny Key at Watsonville on Friday. If you had another USAC show @ Tulare on Labor Day and then the Gold Cup @ Chico the following week it would be one great week of racing. Something close to Indiana's sprint week. Anyway waiting for Calistoga.
