The GRP dirt track racing trivia contest for Sprints and Late Models started at one minute after midnight this morning, Sunday January 21. See how your knowledge of dirt track racing specifically in regards to Minnesota and the surrounding area stacks up to the competition.

While you're on the website be sure to check out the "Minneapolis 500" history work by Noel Allard. Noel has had some of his work published over the years and has graciously shared this great project about the track that was built on the current location of the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport in the early 1900's. The track hosted a race in 1914 but encountered financial problems and ended up closing down shortly after. This track rivaled the one in Indianapolis at the time it was built.

Also, while you're on gotomn.com check out Stan's gotomn dirt track racing podcast. An un-sponsored, non-professional, fly by the seat of my pants look at racing in the upper Midwest. Think of it as a campfire chat at the track campgrounds, an opportunity to share some opinions and racing BS.

No sooner had Stan M waved the checkered flag on the supers and mods, the powerful late model and wild sprint cars invaded the mythical MDTR Speedway for action in the 8th Annual GRP Racing Trivia Contest. Stan dropped the green flag and opening day was underway. Typically an opening day in the contest is relatively quiet. Not so this year. There were three late model entries turned in on Sunday January 21. The sprinters are still testing and tuning.

Just a little over 8 hours into the contest, the last contestant to submit an entry in week #1 became the first contestant to submit an entry in week #2. Yes race fans, Tony Steuck had somehow managed to sneak his #1 South Dakota Race Reports/ATD late model through the back gate without being noticed. Tony surprised all when he came trackside to tackle the MDTR high banks. Many fans were still having breakfast or recovering from their celebrating the night before. For Tony, it was all business. His simple reasoning was if he was the first entry in he would be on top of the standings for at least a little while. The ground-thumping HP of his late model caught the fans attention though, as Tony was clearly hooked up and hauling. One veteran contestant who was just observing today nearly fell off his chair when he learned that Tony turned in a 40 point score that early on. Indeed, Tony was the leader. Smile

Our second entrant in the late model ranks today came from a rookie contestant. Aaron Lund, aka the Brandon Bullett, powered up his Lund Bass Boats #52 late model entry and turned his first laps on the tricky MDTR racing surface. Aaron soon discovered that the moody MDTR track can be difficult to get a hold of. He searched high, low and in the middle. Settling on the low line, Aaron steadily improved his lap times. With Les M waving the checkers (Stan was on coffee break), Aaron sped across the finish line with an 18 point score. He would be the leading rookie on day #1.

Making his competitve return to the MDTR Speedway since his last appearance back in the 4th Annual contest in the late model division, the Team Speed Racing entry of Colin Paetznick and his Fargo Flash #5 late model was in the house! Colin finished in fifth place back in 2003, so he was hoping to once again turn enough laps to qualify for the A Main. With an amazing set-up time of just one hour, Colin drove his white and orange #5 late model down the entrance lane past where he is sometimes seen peering over the turn 2 wall and on to the speedway. It did not take the Fargo Flash long to get accustomed to the familiar MDTR dirt. The HP was definitely there, but Colin may have needed just a tad bit more time in the pits. Still, for only spending one hour total time on his entry, Colin raced under Stan M's checkered flag with a very strong 39 point score. Tony Steuck had withstood the challengers on day #1 and would see his name atop the leaderboard.

Late Model Division Standings (January 21):

1. Tony Steuck, Watertown SD = 40

2. Colin Paetznick, Plymouth MN = 39

3. Aaron Lund, Brandon MN = 18 ROY

*ROY denotes Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year contender.

Note: No sprint car entries received on day #1.

CLARIFICATION:

It has been pointed out to contest promoter GRP that their is some confusion surrounding Question #13 in the late model division. Well, what do you expect when you deal with the number 13?

Seriously, the intention of the question was to list the winner from the 13th Annual race dating back to the beginning when the event first came into existence. The event was run as the Russ Laursen Classic, then changed its name to the Northwest Racing Circuit Classic, and finally settled in with the current day version of the Northern Nationals. A very prestigious and long-running event at the Tri-State and Superior Speedway. Deriving my information directly from a listing provided to me several years by Duane "Andy" Anderson, a noted Superior Speedway racing historian, the event first started in 1970. Should any of you happen to possess a racing paper from the early 1980s era, the number the reporter uses to describe the event differs from one versus Andy's listing. I trust Andy's info. Just giving you guys/gals a heads up on that one. Besides old pack rats like myself and SMNracefan, probably not many of these papers exist anymore. However, for those who know where to look the answer can certainly be found here on the internet. Good luck! Smile

Chuck should hopefully be able to provide you with some pointers on how to handle the water truck. Not sure what he knows about sprint cars. Smile

Just don't let Brian Madsen get in the truck. Stan will black flag him.

The first sprint car entry arrived in the contest on day #2 along with three more late model entries. The Big News today was a lead change in the late model division. Many contestants in the late model ranks will need to fine-tune their entries for competition later in the week at the mythical MDTR Speedway after a strong score was posted in contest action today. Let's take a look at today's activity.

Veteran contest participant John Lackmann returned to MDTR action today with his #00x Crate Sprint. John has steadily shown improvement in this class since his first contest experience when he got upside down in turn 2 early on. It provided some photo ops for Zimmy at the time, and John was a good sport about it on the message boards. With renewed determination, Modchaser along with crew chief Ozzie Osbourne had the crate motor finely tuned. John soon discovered that his sprinter handled better with the lower HP rather than some big ground-thumping beast under the hood. John even considered running fenders on his sprinter, but Ozzie told him that would look like...ah well I can't say it on here. Anyways, Zimmy would get no photos ops of a crash this year. Scorching across the finish line, Modchaser turned in a personal best 25 point score. John certainly has come a long way from that 3 point DNF in the 3rd Annual contest. A huge throng of fans surrounded his sprinter afterwards in the pits looking for an autograph...oh not from John but rather from Ozzie.

In the popular late model division, the first entry today came from a rookie contestant. Jason Richert had his Cadott Music Festival entry singing a fine tune on the MDTR dirt. Jason was looking to overtake the current Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year leader Aaron Lund. Mission accomplished. Jason worked both the low and high lanes enroute to a very good 25 point score in his first contest attempt. Great tunes and lots of fun in his pits following the races.

Ray Beste returned in week #2 with his Pro Walleye Tour/Ray's Lanes #51 late model to try and break the 40 point barrier. Ray wheeled the orange and black ride trackside and stomped on the throttle. Ray struggled just a bit in the middle stages of his run, as he attempted to correct a push that had developed. Using an old tar track trick, Ray was able to get his late model to handle better in the corners by using less throttle. Racin' Ray posted a 36 point score. It was now time to go fishing!

The final late model entry today came from one of the top runners in that class during the past three years. Coming off two seconds and a third, Kevin Mudrak was looking to put his name in the #1 spot on the leaderboard and hopefully withstand the on-slaught from his fellow competitors to gain his first title. Kevin had his Superior LateModel1 entry very well-tuned, as one would expect from this veteran MDTR contestant. After making a few mistakes last week, Kevin vowed there would be none this week. With only a few guesses needed, Kevin blew past all competitors in the early stages of the contest and rode under Stan M's checkered flag with an extremely strong 48 point score. Kevin said he had exhausted all avenues on a couple of his guesses, so he was ready to rock and roll. He certainly did just that! Somebody reported that they thought they heard Kevin decry, "Bring on Stepan!"

Late Model Division Standings (January 22):

1. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 48

2. Tony Steuck, Watertown SD = 40

3. Colin Paetznick, Plymouth MN = 40

4. Ray Beste, Sauk Centre MN = 36

5. Jason Richert, Cadott WI = 25 ROY

6. Aaron Lund, Brandon MN = 18 ROY

Note: A scoring snafu on day #1 on one of the photos in Colin's entry has caused GRP to increase his total score by one point while double-checking. It did not change his position in the standings.

Sprint Car Division Standings (January 22):

1. John Lackmann, Long Prairie MN = 25...Way to go John, you're the leader in the sprints! Smile

*ROY denotes Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year contender.

Come on Sprint Car fans, get your entries in. You're not going to let a Modified fan who used to drive around in a Bazookamobile take first place, are ya?

On the third day in week #2 of the contest, a couple of entries were received in each division. Like yesterday, fans at the MDTR Speedway once again saw a lead change take place. This time it was in the sprint car division. In fact, the lead changed hands twice. In the late model class, action today produced a new second place runner. Here's how things went down at MDTR on day #3.

After posting a leading score in his sprinter yesterday, John Lackmann returned today with his late model entry. The Big Johnson Bazooka Bass #00 was ready to rumble. This piece of work definitely did not have a crate engine! John roared past a group of on-lookers near turn 2, scattering them in the process as he entered the track. As the laps clicked by, John's RR began losing just a little pressure. It must have been the chili. Darn that Keith anyways! The famous Modchaser was able to bring the Bazooka car home with a 32 point tally. John also became the first contestant this year to complete his run in all four contest divisions. Congrats to John and thanks for making an attempt at all four classes!

The second late model entry today came from last year's Rookie of the Year in that division. Having already garnered two Victory Funding Connection ROY titles last week, Mark Schreiner was hoping there would be no sophmore jinx with his Goodyear Tires/Pro Craft Ford #17 late model entry. The old MasterSbilt was still on loan from Eric Breeschoten. As the deep sound of the Ford motor came to life, it caught the attention of many fans. Mark knew his way around the MDTR high-banks, as the #17 could work high or low. Still struggling a bit in the first half of his run, Mark's setup came in strong and he was perfect during the second half of his tour. With the crowd cheering, Tireguy steered his #17 entry under Les M's (Stan was on vacation today) checkered flag with a 44 point score and a second place position in the current standings. His entry fairly early in the week also gave him tie-breaker status should the need arise. Mark's score reflected a 6 point improvement over last year, so this young gun is headed in the right direction.

Our second contest entry in the sprint car division came from a rookie contestant. Jason Johnson brought the Mighty Mouse #27 sprinter north to MDTR to try his hand at the contest. The immaculately prepared entry shown brightly under the sunny skies. Racin' Jason liked the high side, as evidenced by his daring encounters with the heavy cushion up next to the concrete wall. A couple of times Les M was ready to reach for the red flag, but Jason was in control even when it appeared otherwise. Jason completed his run with a fine 34 point performance and was the leader for awhile. By virtue of being the first rookie sprint car entrant, he also found himself in the #1 spot for the Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year award.

Pulling through the back gate rather late in the day, the Hoffman family sprinter from Dell Rapids, South Dakota immediately sparked interest from the fans. They knew based on past history this entry would be a contender for the lead. But would Kayla be driving again or would her dad Todd get behind the wheel? The answer to that question was soon answered when fans noticed Todd doing the crew chief work while Kayla donned her drivers suit. The 2004 Rookie of the Year was behind the wheel of this sprint entry. With a very consistent run on a tricky MDTR surface, Kayla put to good use the setups her dad had provided. Les M twirled the checkers and Kayla checked in with a 40 point effort to overtake Jason Johnson for the lead. This fine young lady contestant was in first and the large crowd was going wild. Both she and her dad knew there would be several more very tough challengers arriving at MDTR soon, but it was time to revel in the moment.

It was reported by Racehead that the KARE11 news cameras caught Keith Mix on film today at MDTR. Keith and Sally were busy handling the concession stands when the news crew arrived. Apparently the word has gotten out about that "smokin" hot chili recipe Keith developed for contest action this year. And here I thought the cameras were there to record the popular appearance of Vinster's VMAX all-girl pit crew. The VMAX crew signed a lot of autographs, especially for the male customers at MDTR today (that figures). No word from Vinster if he will get his VFC sprinter ready for contest action or not. Also seen strolling the pits checking on the competition today was the late model champion in the 4th Annual contest. Yes, Jonesfan2 was in the house. Could the Myrtle Mafia return to MDTR for another contest appearance or was he just doing some scouting?

Late Model Division Standings (January 23):

1. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 48

2. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 44

3. Tony Steuck, Watertown SD = 40

4. Colin Paetznick, Plymouth MN = 40

5. Ray Beste, Sauk Centre MN = 36

6. John Lackmann, Long Prairie MN = 32

7. Jason Richert, Cadott WI = 25 ROY

8. Aaron Lund, Brandon MN = 18 ROY

Sprint Car Division Standings (January 23):

1. Kayla Hoffman, Dell Rapids SD = 40

2. Jason Johnson = 34 ROY

3. John Lackmann, Long Prairie MN = 25

*ROY denotes Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year contender.

Well Stan, Modchaser enjoyed his first place run while it lasted. Jason blew by first and then Kayla passed both of them. We're just approaching the halfway mark, so there is plenty of time left to get those sprinters all tuned up.

I'm happy for Modchaser's performance in the Sprint but John winning your contest would be a tough pill for open wheel fans to swallow. Some of them still haven't gotten over a Late Model driver winning last year's Chili Bowl.

Guest flagman Mike Orness displayed the crossed flags today to indicate that week #2 of the 8th Annual GRP Racing Triva Contest has reached the halfway mark. It was also South Dakota Day at the MDTR Speedway. Three late model entries and one sprint car entry arrived from our neighbors to the west. One of the late model entries made a bid for the lead while the sprint entry moved into the top spot for the VFC Rookie of the Year Award. There was also one late model entry from a popular Minnesota driver today along with one from a Wisconsin contestant who finished in the money last year. A Minnesota sprint car entry arrived late in the day as well. The action from MDTR is next, so here we go.

The first South Dakota contest entry to arrive today came in the wild winged sprint car division. Making the long haul in from Lennox, our first entrant was a contest rookie. Tyler Urban brought his awesome looking Urban Assault Vehicle #U sprint car to the MDTR Speedway in hopes of putting together a good run. When the dust had settled, Tyler showed the large crowd on hand that he was more than up to the challenge. His assault on the ROY leader Jason Johnson was relentless. Jason had put up a real good score of 34 points, but Tyler found traction in the low groove and blasted off turn four to move past the #27 sprinter. Racing under Mike O's checkered flag, Tyler pulled a monster wheelstand to thrill the crowd. His run currently has him leading the Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year battle and also slips him into the #2 spot over all. The large contingent of SD fans quickly dubbed him "The Lennox Lightning."

The final entry in the sprint car ranks today came from a contest rookie. The name is certainly familiar to those who are involved in the sport of sprint car racing, especially around the Jackson area. A J Lusk was making his bid to gain MDTR fame with his Jackson Speedway/Lusk Construction #2 sprint entry. The young phenom turned heads quickly, as he masterfully raced around the high banked 3/8 miler. A couple of slight brushes against the wall (aka Roger Rager rubs) only slowed his pace slightly. A J blasted under Mike O's checkered flag with a very good 33 point effort. All three contest rookies so far have produced strong scores in the 30+ point range. A J had a large fan gathering at his pits following his run.

Three more entries also arrived from South Dakota, but they were in the popular late model division. The three must have been traveling together, as they arrived within several minutes of each other. The first of the South Dakota contingent to come trackside was Al Schmidt. Al was making his third appearance at MDTR this year, having entered in both the modified and super stock divisions last week. This would also be Al's rookie attempt in the late model class. His immaculate looking Smitty's #12 Motorsports & Graphics ride was aiming to overtake Jason Richert for Rookie of the Year honors. Al sawed at the wheel in an attempt to gain the upper hand in the corners. MDTR can be tricky though, causing one to get crossed up real quick. With Mike O holding the white flag, Smitty knew he had to go all out. Nearly looping his #12 in turns 3&4, he recovered to speed under the checkers. Would it be enough? Nope. He came up a couple points short of passing Jason, as Al posted a 24 point score. Same as last week, the fans flocked to his late model afterwards to get some nice picture handouts from the Smitty's #12 Motorsports & Graphics team.

No sooner had Al Schmidt completed his run, a fellow South Dakotan made his way on to the fast MDTR racing surface. With a couple of top ten finishes in the past two contests, the "Red Rocket" from Brookings was looking to crack the top five and make a bid for lead. Yes fans, Rocket Rob Fogle was hooked up and really hauling! He quickly blew past several competitors, gave fellow South Dakotan Tony Steuck a wave, and then set his sights on Tireguy. The Red Rocket Gelling Racing Products #18 made a bid for the #2 spot in turn 2 on the white flag lap. Would Rob be able to thread the needle coming off the corner? Indeed he was able to slip past Tireguy, but with just one lap left could he run down the leader? Despite a perfect second half of the race for the Red Rocket, Kevin Mudrak would be able to withstand his challenge. Rocket Rob finished with a very strong 45 point score and sole possesion of the second place position in the current standings. A large crowd of South Dakota fans were hootin' and hollarin' in the pits afterwards.

The third and final South Dakota entry in the late model division today came from a contestant who was also making his third try in the late model portion of the contest. Roger Koth returned from way out in the center of South Dakota with his NAPA #36k Cobra Chassis late model entry. Roger reported that he left the sprinter back in SD with some motor troubles. He was having a tough time with his late model entry too, so he decided to only haul one over to the contest during week #2 action. Roger started out strong but began to fade near the 1/3 mark of his run. He was never able to fully recover, but he did wheel the flashy #36k ride under Mike O's checkered flag with a 21 point tally. It would be his best effort so far in the late model division, showing a 9 point improvement over last year.

Minnesota was not to be shutout completely today in the late model ranks. Marshall Fegers towed his F19 MasterSbilt on an open trailer out to the MDTR Speedway. Marshall was all alone today, no pit crew. Marshall is no stranger to contest action, so he can handle the setup just fine in his 5th contest appearance in the late model division. Working from memory alone, Marshall proved that he still had some magic as he drove the Team Tan #F19 ride on to the track. Staying in the bottom lane, Marshall moved forward in an effort to crack the top five. In the end, a little more setup work may have done the trick. Nonetheless, Marshall raced home with a 33 point score. We shall see him and his brother at the 5th Annual 20/20 Pro Kart Night this coming Friday in an attempt to once again keep the title in the Fegers family name.

Our final entry today arrived late, but fans knew that the "lead foot" from Rice Lake could certainly be a serious contender. Nate Sevals pointed out though that with a 6 year old and 19 month old as his pit crew, he did not think he was going to do very well this year. He just simply did not have the necessary time to prepare his entry like last year when Nate finished 5th and the year before that when he finished 4th and garnered the ROY title. Nate was right this time, his yellow and orange Fast19 late model looked like it still had some MDTR mud on it from last year. Nate struggled to get the old GRT dialed in. With time running out, Nate decided to give it a spin and see how things turn out. Nate would not have a top five finish this year, as a tire began deflating on lap 1. Nate nursed his ailing ride home with a 23 point score. Time to get a new fresh crate for next year. Flagman Mike Orness packed up his flags and headed down to join the rest of the 20/20 gang in camping area. It had been a busy day for NDakRacefan, having to flag all those South Dakota entries. Smile

With the contest now at the halfway point, rumors flew around the pits at MDTR today. Some fans were talking about the return of guest annoucer HoosiersUp on Thursday. Seems that Terry may be planning on bringing along his Grocery Getter Special and giving the late model division a try following his announcing duties. Now that could be interesting! Stay tuned for a recap of the happenings at MDTR on Thursday.

Kind of like a late model guy winning the modified division Stan. Smile

By the way, get your butt back in that flagstand on Thursday! Les M and Mike O have filled in the past two days. Now it is time for Stan M to take the final three days of contest action, since I believe things are going to heat up...especially in the sprint car division.

The popular HoosiersUp (Terry L) was back in the announcing booth at the MDTR Speedway today for action on the fifth day of the contest here in week #2. The sprint car division dominated the action today with three entries sent in. One of those entries resulted in a lead change though. The late model class was relatively quiet with just one long-haul entry today from Missouri. Knowing that HoosiersUp is a big wing nut fan, we'll start off first with the sprints.

The first entry in the sprint car division today came from a long-time sprint car fan, car owner, mechanic, pit helper, and supplier of Summit Ale. Steve "Steiny" Steinkraus brought his Summit #45 to the top of the world today, well okay to the MDTR Speedway today, in order to try his luck in contest action. It seems like Steiny eats, sleeps and breathes sprint cars (and midgets and champ cars), so it was only appropriate for him to take a turn behind the wheel. Steiny brought his ultra-expensive IMCA motor to life and roared trackside. Hey, Steiny even managed to give Stan M a wave in the flagstand just before Vinster blinded him in turn 1 with the flash of his camera. Not detered by this minor setback, Steiny mashed the gas. With the sprint entry losing some momentum in the waning laps, he searched for a different line. In his first attempt, Steiny recorded a 32 point score. It was now time to crack open a Summit Ale. Stan M was tempted to head over to his pits, but GRP got on the radio and told Stan to hold his ground in the flagstand. Les M and Vinster were seen heading towards the Summit Ale hauler.

Our second sprint car contestant today is also the current leader in the late model division. He is now also the new leader in the sprint car division! That's right race fans! Kevin Mudrak brought his Lens Auto Body Sprint1 entry to MDTR in hopes of doing well. Running a limited sprint against the "big motors," Kevin gave a bunch of credit to his crew. Without their expert assistance, Kevin figured he would just have been a mid pack runner at best. Not so today! Kevin was very consistent in both segments of his run. His sprint worked well high or low. A few bobbles near the 3/4 mark kept him busy, but in the end Kevin flew under Stan M's checker flag with a very stout 43 point score. HoosiersUp was thrilled to be able to call a lead change in the sprint car division pulled off by a late model driver! Heads were turned in the grandstand and the pit area alike. The joint was buzzing with his performance. Some veteran sprint car fans nodded in approval, but simply stated that some of the big guns from South Dakota have not arrived yet. For now, Kevin is in the #1 spot in both divisions. Way to go Kevin!

Our third entry today came again from the Lusk sprint car operation in Jackson. This time it was Nick Lusk making a return to the MDTR Speedway after an absence of three years. Nick wheeled his Lusk #22 Lightning Chassis through the back gate much earlier this year, as back in 2004 his entry arrived moments after the contest deadline but before any results or answers had been posted so he was allowed to compete. With A. J. Lusk putting up a 33 point score, Nick was determined to find a line that would help him defeat A. J. Pushing the cushion ever so higher, the fleet #22 sprinter was strong. Although the #22 jumped the cushion on a couple of occasions, Nick was able to pedal quickly to keep from wrecking. In the end, Nick stormed under the checkered flag with a fine 36 point performance. It was an incredible 19 point improvement over his first contest try and certainly has him in line for the Most Improved Score Award. At the moment, Nick also finds himself holding down the fourth spot in the point standings. Many fans liked the Lightning graphics on his sprinter and headed to his pits to get a picture of this flashy machine.

The lone late model entry today came from a contestant who has entered the contest every year in the late model division except last year when his hauler broke down enroute. He hails from the "Show Me State" of Missouri. Long-time MDTR fans recognized the Super Slinger Special with driver Terry "Mud" Slinger behind the wheel. Contest promoter GRP doesn't even know where Terry hails from in Missouri (he's never put down his hometown), but this Show Me pilot is practically a fixture at MDTR. Terry enters the contest solely for his own enjoyment. Being out of the loop with respect to this area, he does not expect to do well. A true sportsman...just participating for the fun of it. Terry got his old Sanger chassis dialed in for several laps, but the ill-handling old crate would not come up to speed. No worries though, as Terry just sat back and enjoyed his Thursday afternoon drive. Stan M gave him a double checkered to honor his presence once again at MDTR. There would be no top score, but as Terry indicated it was fun. He would finish with 11 points, the same score by the way he earned in his very first contest appearance back in 2001. Happy travels home Terry, where ever in Missouri that might happen to be.

Contest promter GRP would like to thank HoosiersUp for calling the action again today. Terry can now get his Grocery Getter Special ready for the contest after participating in the 5th Annual 20/20 Racing Pro Kart Night on Friday evening January 26. Because of this event, GRP will not be home on Friday night to score any entries. I will catch up on the scoring on Saturday, so for those who submit an entry on Friday please be patient. The full rundown will be posted some time on Saturday and then the final daily report will be up following the conclusion of the contest. Can Kevin Mudrak hold the lead in both divisions? We're going to kick it up a notch I do believe with just two laps (days) remaining.

Come on now GRP,,,,,, You know that the watering job is for those old, retired, ex-late model driving guys like Chuck,,,, I'm much more of the grader type,,, have to stick with those "open" wheels anyway that I can!! LOL

Congrats on the nice run by Steiny,,,, I wonder if his fading in the late going was do to his getting up there in age and maybe falling out of the seat a little....... LOL
