Does anyone know who that guy was? It was during Time trials... and it was a long time ago... I was a little kid! my brother and I witnessed it and thought we had just watched a fatality, the guy got up and walked away!!! his seatbelts came undone during the flip//// I dont know if he drove danny p's car or was just affiliated with him. It was at santa maria

Don O'Keefe. Heard the belts came loose during his qualifying run and he kept going because he thought he could make it without any problems.

Are you sure it was Don O'Keefe? It was a blue car coming out of turn 4. I have the footage somewhere. It was shot by Larry Ulam's Speedway Video. I met the guy at Knoxville maybe 10 years ago. We had a booth set up selling our "Greatest Hits of Open Wheel Racing" video. He was watching the video, and said that was him when he saw the clip. That was his last race and he went on to work for Edlebrock.

It was not Don O'Keefe, it was Dave Crowell in a #32 car in which he owned,he was a friend of Danny P.
The car was a white body with blue frame and numbers.

We have a winner.
Warning - It is very graphic but he does get up and walk away. Again, credit for the video goes to Larry Ulam's Speedway Video, credit for Dave walking away goes to a higher authority.
Larry has a new production that I'm sure this clip is on. It covers 20 years of thrills and spills from Santa Maria. You can contact him here.

I couldnt find his web site.

I was 16 when that happened, and was in the pits helping out another team. That crash freaked me out, and I still cant believe he got up, and walked away. Dave worked at Simpson, and helped develop that seat belt, he was extremely lucky, and I should of stayed out of sprint cars after seeing that crash, but oh well.

I noticed Glen Howard right away, good eyes to notice Evelyn. This isnt quite "day one" however as they both had beeen around much longer than this. Its only from the early 90's. I think Evelyn uses that same clipboard today! I like your spirit though.

I remember it as clearly as if it was last week.....but can't remember what year. Probably mid-80's....maybe '85 or '86.

If I'm not mistaken it was in 1989. They've showed this on that show called Whacked Out Sports videos (I think that's the name of it) on a number of occasions.
I also believe they have showed the Kruseman midget crash from Cal Expo back in 94 a few times.

Yes, it was 1989 for sure. We ran hanford the night before. I remember hearing the hit and then watched as he fell out of the car as it rolled seemingly on top of him. A very lucky man indeed.

Same weekend at Hanford, Keith Nafzger took a pretty wild flip in qualifying. Ended up in the pits with a broken collarbone. Both crashes were shown on the ESPN show hosted by Dave Despain. Speedweek?

I have 2 visions in my mind every time someone brings this crash up.
1) The crash video shown on ESPN
2) Cory and Carrie in the Hospital on ESPN
It would suit me just fine to never have to see those images again.
