FT: Cardey at just over :18.00 (track very dry and slow all night; more about that later).
Heats: 1) Jones over Ballard, 2) Spencer over Miller with Gaunt coming back to 4th after jumping out of gear and going to the back, 3) Mitchell over Severson after a nice duel.
No B Main (all 22 cars started the A Main).
A Main lineup (first ten):
Mitchell ... Miller (who went to high school together, we were told)
Ballard ... Hansen (Ballard drove the red and white #75; Hansen was in the all-white #7)
Sheridan ... Brown
Severson ... Spencer
Cardey ... Jones
A Main rundown:
Mitchell lead from the start in the #87 (one of the two J. W. Mitchell cars that dominated a few months back) through several restarts. The track was so dry, and the dust s bad, that USAC threw the red at Lap 4. Ray went out to water the surface but ran out of water after doing the inside lane only.
Mitchell led from the restart but his engine (which later blew altogether) began to sour, and Hansen took over. Jones came through the pack in the midst of several more restarts, but in the end...
It was Hansen, Miller, Jones, Spencer, Showtime and Brown.
There was a lot of commentary in the stands about running the PASCAR Modified A Main before the USAC-CRA A Main on an obviously "stressed" track.
Kruser missed this show after missing the show last week in Santa Maria. Scott reported that he is ill.
