Mike Henry runs 8th at American Valley Speedway
By Gary Thomas
Quincy, CA – May 4, 2008…Fighting through a fast and tough racing surface on Saturday night Sacramento’s Mike Henry battled it out and brought home an eighth place finish during the feature at the American Valley Speedway. The event marked the second ever appearance at the track for the Golden State Challenge Series, but the first for Henry.
Day time temps were beautiful at the Quincy based track, but a couple of separate rain showers after 3pm delayed the start of the night’s festivities and caused the event to run until nearly midnight. The rain and cool night time temps made the track lightning fast however, and many drivers were underneath the existing American Valley Speedway track record.
Henry was the third driver to hit the speedway in qualifying and with the Don Ott engine hitting hard he became the first ever competitor in the 14 second bracket with his first lap of 14.937 aboard the HMH Motorsports, World Environmental No. 93. Only two more drivers were able to beat the lap so the two-time Civil War Series champ was third quick to end qualifying.
The track remained very narrow during the rest of the night though and passing opportunities were limited due to the extremely fast surface. Henry scored fifth place finishes in both the heat race and the dash to put the C & H Veteran Enterprises, Royal Lagoon pools machine on the inside of the third row for the 30 lap main event.
Fighting the fast race track Henry dropped a few spots early on in the feature and ran the final 20 or so laps in eighth where he would go on and finish at the checkered flag. Following the event in Quincy the Sacramento driver still sits second in the GSC point standings, but is now 52 back of leader Jonathan Allard and three points ahead of third place Brent Kaeding.
This coming Saturday night will find Henry and the HMH Motorsports team make the haul down to the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway for the annual Chris & Brian Faria Memorial. It will be the third GSC stop of the season to the Tulare County Fairgrounds track and in the previous two visits Henry has tallied finishes of sixth and ninth.
