now the weather for sat in Knoxville calls for pm showers, but only 40% chance. Well what in the heck does that mean? sheesh. This weather is getting so old. I see meyers is already in town, as well as some souvenier trailers.

You had to ruin it for me! I already changed my travel plans this weekend thinking it was a rain/snowout....
Fenders are like vacuums... they both suck.

It's 6 am Friday morning and it is raining and thundering but the forecast for Saturday is now just overcast and no big danger of rain. 20% possibility. Let's go with that one for now. It does seem to change by the hour or so. Let's go racin' boys!
My wife told me if I went to one more Sprint Car race
she would leave me.................I'm sure gonna miss
that ol' gal.

It wasn't raining last Saturday either. But if it was too wet to have races then, why wouldn't it be the same old problem this week?

So they are gonna make a decision at 5:00 to race or not tomorrow. What does the fans want? I know the drivers want to race, sounds like they absoulety need to race, have to put food on the table some how. I say lets race. It has been such a long winter, I am willing to sit in 30 degree weather and watch a race, ha.

ok lets say that the race is still on for saturday.. on saturday it rains how hard do you think that knoxville will push it to make the race.. my opinion is that they will have to push hard because you have guys comin from all over the midwest to race.. I believe that they will cancel for a chance of sprinkles right now..

Does World Racing Group (the WoO) still collect deposits, that were, in part non- refundable, in advance of racing events? Didn't Ted used to get a pretty good chunck of the sanctioning fee a year or even two years in advance? There were some WoO races held then in some pretty miserable weather. The tracks usually didn't cancel for fear of losing a part of their investment.
The reason I ask the question is because weather plays such a role in determining whether an event is going to make it financially, or not. Figure a sanction fee and purse coming to around $75,000, in addition to advertising, facility costs and incidentals, a WoO sprint car event carries an investment of at least $100,000.
Advance ticket sales don't add up to as much as they used to, for whatever reason, in most places. Therefore, good weather is vital to a strong walk-up at the gate. Last year, the April Knoxville show had perfect weather and a really outstanding walk-up crowd. Probably had at least 6,000 tickets sold.
If it's only going to be in the 30's or 40's Saturday night, with even a chance of rain and a west-northwest raw breeze blowing toward the granstand, it's going to be hard to get half of last year's crowd.
The track and the series want to race. The race teams and the hard core fans want to race. I guess the question is...what's the financial viability of racing if it's going to be such a financial risk under the likely conditions? Who makes the decision to race or not to race, the WoO or the track? Are there incentives built into the contract between track and sanctioning body to make sure everything is done to hold the event (or reschedule, if neccessary)?
It may be an interesting decision come Saturday. I hope, somehow, the weather clears up and warms up, the crowd comes out and everybody makes money and everybody sees a great show. I'm just wondering what the dynamics and incentives are to make every possible effort to get the show in, not just at Knoxville, but everywhere else, too.

WoO is at US 36 next Frday, May 2nd, then at Granite City and Paducah on May 9th and 10th, respectivly. Next Saturday and Sunday is open...what's the incentive to reschedule?
I noticed that Husets hasn't reschuled tonight's race. According to the press release it's cancelled and WoO will return in June for a regularly scheduled show. Why would Knoxville be any different?

Well I had the camper loaded & waiting for the wife to get home to head for Knoxville. Tornado siren went off in town 4 miles away, as many as 4 tornados touched down in the area the closest 2 miles east of my house at Wild Cat Den! 1 1/2 in rain in about 1/2 hour. it's a friggen mess here. Looks good towards Knoxville so hopefully this was the grand finale.

For the past 7 or 8 years, the midwest hasn't had a spring and promotors started scheduling races earlier and earlier. This year we are actually having a spring and now it's a grim reminder on why the season never really got started until well into the month of May back in "the day".
