Brian Brown – Knocking on the Door!
(Bill W) April 9, 2008 – Last weekend saw solid podium finishes for sprint car ace Brian Brown. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver garnered a second place finish at LA Raceway on Saturday night in La Monte, Missouri, before towing to Eagle Raceway in Nebraska to take third in the Ice Breaker Challenge on Sunday afternoon. The Doogs Racing SuperClean #21 has one more weekend to prepare for its defense of the Knoxville Raceway track title!
Thirty-five Winged Outlaw Warriors sprinters found their way to La Monte's 3/8-mile oval. Brian drew inside row three for the fourth and final heat race, but restarted at the back quickly. "We went over the bank and came to a stop," he says. "We started eighth on the restart, and we were able to get back up through there and win it. The car was great!"
Starting outside row two of the 20-lap main event, Brian filed in behind Jesse Hockett early on. "We took off, and straight into second behind Jesse," he says. "I thought we had something for him, but we kept getting freer and freer. It turns out it was a bleeder issue." Despite pulling in with 10 pounds in the right rear (after starting with seven) and the left rear with 7 pounds, Brian was able to hold onto a solid second place finish.
"To have those kinds of problems and still end with a good finish against quality cars was frustrating because you didn't win, but looking at the big picture we could have easily dropped to third or fourth," says Brian. "We're knocking on the door for that first win! It's a little frustrating."
The team got up early and headed to Eagle, Nebraska on Sunday, as hot laps were slated for 2 p.m. With a typical day track in store complete with a cold breeze, a good draw would be the key to anyone's success. "With the top three finishers in the heat redrawing for the feature, we were able to go from fifth to second in our heat," says Brian. "It was typical daytime racing, but at this point, if we can get any race in, we're doing good. We drew a six for the feature. There was rubber down on the track in the heats already, so obviously, we'd have rather drawn the inside row, but that isn't how it worked out."
The first start went well for the SuperClean #21, but an incident brought about a restart. "On the initial start, we got clear up to third, but on the second one, we were back in fifth or sixth," says Brian who eventually filed in behind leader Terry McCarl and Billy Alley. "We worked our way up there a little bit (to third). My only hope was McCarl and Billy making mistakes, and they don't usually do that. It is what it is. It's better than sitting with your feet up on Sunday!"

Brian's Q&A
Chris asks: I see that you are running a new front hub this year. What brand is it and why the switch?
Brian answers: They are new from Weld Racing. It is a three-spoke hub that takes 1/3 of the horsepower to turn it, and it's just as strong as the old hubs. Weld Racing has been innovative for 25-30 years, and they still are. They are on top of the wheel game and will continue to be. I'm just excited they chose us to do a little R&D with it. It should be out in the future.

Brown's Bits
Unfortunately, Brian's plans of running at Nebraska Raceway Park were washed out for this weekend. Brian has a great track record at NRP. In eight starts there, he has four wins. It looked to be five wins one year ago in April, but mechanical difficulties sidelined him while leading. Those DNF and a 12th place showings with the World of Outlaws in 2003 are his only starts outside of the top ten. His biggest win at NRP would probably be the 2005 Lawrence Ideus Memorial, when he topped Chad Humston, Jason Martin, Billy Alley and Don Droud Jr.
