Did Shane piss away his career? Probably. Was he an a-hole to a lot of people along the way? You betcha. Will he relapse again? That is a possibility. One would think that if he's making an effort to get back into racing, he is probably peeing into a sample cup more than a toilet. I work in the substance abuse industry and can tell you that there's a fair number of people that stay addicted mostly because it's a lot easier than quitting. There is a minority that does have enough drive to get off and stay off but they have to work really, really hard for a long time in order to get there. Will Shane be one of them? Who knows. The deal with Shane has been discussed on another forum http://indianaopenwheel.com/vmessageboard/showthread.php?t=4253 and I see there that Tim Clauson is involved in this deal. Tim is a respected, stand up guy and if he's involved, then there might be something good happening here.

Chad -

Some folks earn second(and third) chances. So, while most of us have never had to face Shane's demons, I think that until he proves otherwise, he deserves a chance to get his act together. I'm sure that the BCRA took Shane's past into consideration before allowing him to compete.

Shane has fallen a long way from his NASCAR days. I'm sure that his suspension is a source of pain for his family. If he messes up again, well, his car owner and the BCRA took a chance on him.....

Would you rather lock him away on a desert island somewhere?

Rich, here's the thread with Tim Clauson's comments...

Go to the Indiana Open wheel message board and open up the thread "Shane Hmeil wins 1st time out in midget". Go to page two and read the post by Tim Clauson (Bryan's dad). This will address most of your concerns.

You beat me to the punch Rich & Chuck

RACERX3C,

I had the pleasure to hang out and race against Shane this weekend in Shasta, and I personally have never met a nicer or more polite guy. I don't know much of the details about his past, but my family and I saw the new Shane Hmiel. He came into our toterhome to watch the Craftsman truck race with my family, and he was very polite and had an outstanding knowledge of truck racing. On top of all that, he is an amazing racecar driver. I think it is great that he is starting in BCRA and is working his way back up from the very bottom. I'm sure he could have just gone and found an ARCA ride or go straight to running with the USAC National Midget series, but it was his decision to start back at the lower ranks. By doing this, I beleive that he is trying to earn back the respect that he had lost from other racers. I know he has gained my respect, and I think that it is wrong that people refuse to give him another chance to redeem himself.
