What would be considered a "normal" amount paid as sponsorship.

Question is posed to car owners/drivers rather than mis=informed fans.

Sponsorship with in kind trade?

cash only?

Duane,

It depends on where you are racing and what you & your sponsor are looking for. I have both owned cars and sponsored cars and the deals are different everytime & from year to year. I have had sponsors give me large amounts of cash one year, and then the next year buy equipment for me (no cash). I have had sponsors who provided uniforms for the team members, bought tires for the car, bought fuel for the transporter & race car, etc...

Probably the first thing you need to do is figure out your teams needs, and then figure out what your team is willing to do in exchange for the sponsorship you are going to ask for (appearances, t-shirts, special events, pictures, etc...). That is always a good starting point. For example.

If your team needs $50,000 for next season, you need to do a breakdown of what you need and what it costs. Then figure out sponsorship packages that cover the items you need. Next, figure out how much space on the car (top wing, main body, lower body, nose wing, etc...) is worth. If you have a nice hauler, space on there is worth money as well. I had one sponsor who didn't even care if his company was on the car as long as he was the biggest on the hauler (wanted people to see his business going up and down the road).

When we were competing I asked $15,000-$20,000 for the top wing, $5,000-$8,000 for the main body, $500-$1,000 for the lower body, and $2,000-$3,000 for the nose wing. As I said before I had sponsors who purchased needed items for the team. One sponsor gave us money towards buying a motor, one sponsor bought our tires for us, and another sponsor bought fuel for the race cars. I also had a t-shirt sponsor who did our team t-shirts for us for basically nothing (most of them were free).

So, I hope this helps you a little bit and good luck. Remember, the key is this, "Its not what your sponsors can do for you, its what you can do for your sponsors!" I had my car at special events, took special photos for sponsors to display at their businesses, even had my car in a TV commercial for one of my sponsors. Anything you can do to make them feel appreciated and help promote their business. One last thing, a nice touch is to rent a VIP box at least once a season and have a sponsor's appreciation night at the track. I did this and my sponsors LOVED IT!!!! Good luck.

I already give what I can give, I hear some wild numbers floating around sometimes, both low and high.

I am in the sponsor appreciation business so I make thank you plaques ect for a couple teams as my7 dinky part in helping.

If I won the Lotto, I would do more, I guess I really don't do it for the advertisement value as much as for the love of the sport.

I don't think there could really be a concrete answer on this one. There are just to many variables. I think it depends on who your sponsoring, where they're racing, what do you want in return etc...
