Any thoughts about this?

Wesmar Racing Engines)“360’s are too slow” – “360’s aren’t much cheaper to run than a 410” – “ASCS doesn’t pay nothing” These were some phrases muttered in the past by a few WoO drivers who happened to show up at Oklahoma City’s ASCS Spring Nationals in an attempt to cherry pick the pockets of Emmett Hahn’s faithful followers while their series laid idle. In the end when all the preliminary events are run and the big money on the final night is on the line Wesmar Racing Engines once again stood atop the podium! Driving Lanny Row’s faithful #41 Jason Johnson took advantage of his pole position starting spot then withstood several challenges from Daryn Pittman and in the closing stages from Danny Lasoski to secure his second OKC Spring Nationals victory in three years. In a field of 24 cars in which saw 11 of those utilizing Wesmar power Gary Wright continued his streak of 19 consecutive top 5 finishes with a third place finish aboard his own #9 and maintained his points lead over fellow Wesmar Warriors Wayne Johnson and Jason Johnson. Sitting in Victory Lane sipping on the winners champagne waiting for you to join the winning team at www.wesmarracing.com or by calling 918-366-7311 3/25

Wesmar, it looks like you have the 360's going good. How many 410 events did you win last year?

thats classic. and true................

probably a smart bet to be the best engine builder of the 360's instead of 410's. I wonder how many total 410 drivers there are in the nation - and how many 360 drivers? Lot more 360's than 410's. And Wesmar already looked far enough into the future to start a 305 program.............

bet business is doing awfully well up there in Bixby, Oklahoma...............

I love how McCarl slams 360's - but last weekend in OKC couldn't manage anything. motor problems maybe? maybe him and a few others shoulda stopped by Bixby on the way up north to home. I say that - but I was very glad to see the field of cars present at OKC.

Well the spoils go to the victors so they have every right to toot their own horn! However, it does bring up an interesting topic for discussion. All three of the drivers mentioned have had significant experience and success in the 410 ranks. Jason Johnson* had a great 410 nationals run (was that an Ott?), Gary Wright has won a gazillion NCRA 410 features and titles, and if I am not mistaken I think Wayne "hot dog" Johnson** recently won an Allstar 410 show in Florida this year.

I think that the drivers who consistently drive the 360's have an advantage because they react much differently than the 410 stuff. So when you take a guy like Lasoski or Pittman or McCarl who are all great drivers in their own right and take away 200 hp there is definately a different learning curve. But you still cannot deny that the 410 experience makes it easier to drive the 360's and the sensation of speed is much less.

I think that the 410 experience that drivers like Jack Dover, Natalie Sather, Zach "don't call me dave" Chappell (to name a few) have had has made them better racers than if they would have only run 360's.

So in my own humble opinion, any driver with 410 experience is cherry-picking when they run a 360 race and that includes a good portion of our top beloved ASCS tour drivers!

No matter what, it takes a great amount of preparation and determination to drive/race any sprint car. I am just glad that we all have the opportunity to compete against some of the best in the business every opportunity that we can. Here's to a safe and prosperous 2008 season for everyone!

Well? What is the difference in cost of the top of the line 360 versus a 410? What does the ASCS pay for a feature win versus the WoO?

i think about $10,000. ASCS pays 4 or 5 grand to win.

WoO? didnt thay run some mini series in florida a few months back? i seem to remember some "outlaw" race or something like that......

I'm guessing that the difference is between $5k and 10k. I have no idea what ASCS pays. Maybe $3k?

But the last time I looked, the WoO boys were getting $10k to win a one night show.....

But while it's OK to blow your own horn, I can't say that Kelly & Co, made any new friends by slamming the 410 guys - but that's just my opinion.....

Who cares about top of the line costs? If you are talking about cost savings, what sense does it make to only look at the guys who can afford top of the line stuff? Better yet, how little can you spend and still be competitive in ASCS vs. WoO?

New parts are expensive and guys who have money are going to spend it. How competitive would a top of the line WoO motor from 10yrs ago be today? How competitive would a top of the line ASCS motor from 10yrs ago be today?

sprintfan0, I know ethel's (post below yours) husband won a couple for us at Knoxville last year. Jeremy Sherman and Jesse Hockett won a few 410 non-wing races for us as well. There were more but I'm not going to sit and research it.

OKCfan, those were quotes taken from SC&M magazine, and one quote in particular by a WoO driver who personally called me last week looking to "lease" and engine for OKC.

sprinter25, look at response above. We've made plenty of 410 friends since we've been in business since 1987, since 1983 if you count our time at Blue Max when we built engines for Sammy.

Glad you guys enjoy them. Of course I could go the "vanilla" route by doing a press release that touts a driver for running 9th in the B feature missing the A by 5 spots "but we had the car dialed in for that 9th place run." We'll take what we learned here and move on hoping to improve to 8th place.

lol, I get a kick out of the PR's that brag on 14th place finishes in the C-mains also.

The hardest thing I have to do each week is write the PR's for our team when we finished 4th or 5th.

It is much easier to brag on a win lol.

Aw hell Kelly.....I thought it was sarcastic and funny as well.  I agree with you putting a little spice into your releases.  As far as cost goes....everyone always talks about what it is to win with ASCS vs. Outlaws, and how much difference in cost for a new motor.  What's the difference in cost to maintain those motors over 20 races?  Lightweight high rev motors are freshen every 4 races with new valves and springs every freshen, and new pistons atleast once if not twice in those 20 races.  ASCS engine will go those 20 races easy with some new valve springs about 1/2 way through in my experience as a car owner.  So $400 on top of a $35,000 engine as compared to a freshen at roughly $6,000 - $7,000 atleast 4 times over the course of the 20 races on a $45,000 engine what do you get?  You're not making out any better or even worse running the 410.  Not to mention with the Outlaws you're criss-crossing the country time and again just to race 2-3 shows only to go 1500 miles back the other way.  ASCS has 1/10 of the miles to travel for their national series.  I'm not bashing the 410's in any way, don't get me wrong.  I'm a bigger fan of the sport than many...and I really don't care if it's got a hamster turning the rear wheels as long as it's a sprint car and it's a good race.

www.iceman24racing.com

I mainly just do PR type things and maintain the web site, as well as try to keep the other sponsors happy with plaques, magnets, photo cards ect from my shop.

I don't have the money to be a "big" sponsor, my contribution is non monetary value, and spend a little time hunting for other sponsors for him.

That's cool Duane, your atleast contributing in some way, shape, or form.

We often send out shitloads of gift certificates to other organizations or series in an effort to help their racers.

Jake, do you or have you ever owned engines? Tell me who get's their engines freshened after 4 nights? The difference between a new 410 and a new 360 is around $10,000. Where I come from the local 360's race for roughly half of what the 410's race for.

Well, when you can't beat the 410 guys at their own game, you've got to have something to brag about I guess?

He does have a point though, a week earlier in Eckerts article Pittman shot off his mouth about how he wouldn't race with these guys. And look where he showed up!

I wonder if Johnson had a "Wesmar" in the car he was testing Monday night at the Grove?
