Paul McMahan wins opening night of Mini Gold Cup

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – March 7, 2008…Former Mini Gold Cup champ Paul McMahan returned home to capture the opening leg of the Golden State Challenge Series sanctioned 22nd annual Mini Gold Cup at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night. The former WOO regular was dominant for much of the night and led all 30 laps from the pole position after winning the night’s dash.

The 30 lap feature began with Mcmahan jumping to a commanding lead aboard the Brian Sperry No. 51 machine. As Mcmahan was out front by himself, the battle for second began to heat up between Grass Valley’s Brad Sweet and Chico’s Jonathan Allard. The pair ran nose to tail until the 12th circuit when Allard was able to slip underneath Sweet for the runner-up spot.

At this point San Jose’s Tim Kaeding was the man on the move from the 14th starting spot as he charged around the high side of the ¼ mile bullring and passed two cars on lap 19 to move into fifth. The action was hot and heavy with a number of green flag laps run consecutively on the racy surface and around lap 20 the battle for the lead saw a three car dog fight in traffic between McMahan, Allard and Sweet.

Allard was able to get side by side with McMahan for the lead on lap 21, but couldn’t get the traction to take over the top spot. Sweet then showed that he wasn’t done yet and was able to carve his way back by Allard for second and just as the top three were nose tail once again; a caution flew for Campbell’s Brent Kaeding who slowed to a stop on lap 26.

McMahan pulled away on the restart and the fight was yet again for the runner-up spot. Allard tried everything he could to get back by Sweet, but the youngster was able to do a solid job and keep the former GSC champ at bay. When the checkered flag was unveiled McMahan crossed the stripe in first followed by Sweet in the Rod Tiner No. 83 and Allard in the Williams Motorsports No. 0.

San Jose’s Tim Kaeding ended his crowd pleasing run in the fourth spot aboard the Tom Rolfe Racing No. 10 and Tyler Walker in the SC Motorsports No. 24 rounded out the top five. Completing the top 10 were Andy Forsberg, Kevin Sharrah, Jason Meyers, Sean Becker and Shane Stewart. The opening night of the 22nd annual event saw fantastic racing and tomorrow is expected to be every bit as exciting for the final night of racing at the Mini Gold Cup.

Very nice, Gary, getting the results and story out in quick succession! Congrats to Paul McMahan on a popular win!

Now, what's the story behind Wimmer driving the Roth 83jr instead of Sammy Swindell?
