Brett Miller set for second career Mini Gold Cup
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – March 5, 2008…Chico, CA driver Brett Miller will begin his third full season of winged sprint car racing during this weekend’s 22nd annual Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. This will be Miller’s second career attempt at the event after running his first Mini Gold Cup last season.
The 18 year-old is coming off a year that saw him score Rookie of the Year honors with the Golden State Challenge 410 Series and tally a seventh place finish in the season long point standings. Miller scored his two career best GSC finishes, a pair of fourths during back to back events in June. He and the Care Free Pools Racing team gained a world of experience traveling with the series last year and will look to put it to use in 2008.
In Miller’s first Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway one year ago he started from the 22nd position in the Saturday finale and charged forward on a rough surface to record an 11th place finish in the 45 car field. In addition to the Mini Gold Cup he also picked up his second career sprint car win in April when he beat veterans Jason Statler and Stephen Allard to the line during the second point race of the season.
The ’07 year saw Miller struggle through tough luck much of the season with a number of strong runs thwarted by misfortune. Even despite that however, he was also able to bring home a career best fourth place finish in the Feather Falls Casino Point Standings at Silver Dollar Speedway, just 20 digits out of third.
The team’s dedication to the sport was noticed and team owner Bill Bell received the Dave Bradway Jr. Inspiration Award at the Golden State Challenge Series banquet in January. Due to engine issues Miller had to compete in a handful of races with a 360 power plant under the hood, but despite that fact, the team didn’t miss one GSC or Silver Dollar 410 event last year.
This season Miller and the 1x team will focus on picking up the Silver Dollar Speedway track championship and competing in some of the bigger events throughout the year. Miller’s Care Free Pools No. 1x will also be on display during Thursday’s Media Day held on the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico.
The 22nd annual Mini Gold Cup kicks off this Friday night March 7 and will conclude on Saturday evening with a 40 lap main event worth $6,000 to win. All seating will be general admission with front gates opening at 5 pm each night.
