I'm an engineer. Everything I know and understand is based on logic. I've worked on unmanned vehicles that can detect obstacles and recalcuate a path using sensors on the outside of the frame. I still don't understand how, if we are experiencing global warming, we have a wind chill of -40 AT LEAST once a week, we've had 65 inches of snow so far with more on the way in an area that averages 30 a year, and I've spent the last 4 days slipping and sliding my way to work on roads that are covered in solid sheets of ice (with lovely ruts) that cannot be cleared. Am I missing something? Can someone explain how global warming causes the worst, coldest winter we've had in over 16 years? And then, could someone send Al Gore and any other tree hugger over here to clear the global warming off of my driveway, sidewalks, balcony, etc.?

Wait - is that the Same Al Gore that invented the internet? Let him know it globally warmed here in the Buckeye State, too. I think the temp was 6 this morning when I woke up and it got up to a balmy 10 by the time I had to unload the construction waste out of my truck into a dumpster covered in ice and snow. I assume it is due to the polar ice caps melting...or something.

You don't understand global warming ... since the winter here has been one of the coldest/snowiest on record it is the fault of global warming. If we would have had one of the nicest/warmest instead ...it would again prove global warming. How ever if we would have had an average winter ...it is the calm before the storm, global warming ALWAYS takes a year or two off. No matter what the weather is or has been it proves global warming. I just hope Osama "Hoosier Mama" Barama will make the weather perfect, much like he is going to cure cancer, make every one wealthy, end taxes, reduce the deficit and provide us with a 32 hour work week and 6 weeks "paid" every year.

Can you say average? New England is enjoying a much warmer than average winter. It was 55 here yesterday. And, BTW, the folks who study the climate say that the major effect of global warming will be wildly changing weather patterns, not consistently warmer ones.
You can't argue that the average, world-wide temperature is not getting warmer, because the numbers say it is. What you can argue about (if you have some facts) is whether or not human actions are any part of it.

You are waisting your time with a lot of this bunch. You might as well be banging your head against the wall. They only see what they want to see and any amount of facts or science will not change that. Personal I think it's fear.

It's just one of those years, the worst I can remember since moving back to Iowa in '91.
But it sure makes me miss Arizona right now...

Evidently some of you haven't seen Day After Tomorrow...lol. Extreme weather seems like a pretty simple concept to a lot of us. Don't worry however, positive change might be coming. And while some of you may also find it hard to believe... not via Halliburton...lol.

Well if humans are, maybe we should go back to behaving the same way we did in the 70's, when we were causing "global cooling".

PS Trying to convince my recently acquired Kansas City roommate that winters aren't always like this up here in Canucksville will be aided by this thread, I thank you....

The best time to sell Global warming is during July. Makes me wonder who is making money on this?

sell? in july? global warming? i don't think the global warming in these guys yards will still be fresh enough to sell by then. maybe they could freeze dry it.

Freeze dried global warming, now there's a concept. If I buy it can I count it toward my carbon credits?

an inconvenient SUN that warms the Earth?
multiple expert climate sources kicking Al Gore right square in the nuts...PRICELESS!

Blog: Science Temperature Monitors Report Widescale Global Cooling Michael Asher (Blog) - February 26, 2008 12:55 PM
World Temperatures according to the Hadley Center for Climate Prediction. Note the steep drop over the last year.
Twelve-month long drop in world temperatures wipes out a century of warming
Over the past year, anecdotal evidence for a cooling planet has exploded. China has its coldest winter in 100 years. Baghdad sees its first snow in all recorded history. North America has the most snowcover in 50 years, with places like Wisconsin the highest since record-keeping began. Record levels of Antarctic sea ice, record cold in Minnesota, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Australia, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Greenland, Argentina, Chile -- the list goes on and on. No more than anecdotal evidence, to be sure. But now, that evidence has been supplanted by hard scientific fact. All four major global temperature tracking outlets (Hadley, NASA's GISS, UAH, RSS) have released updated data. All show that over the past year, global temperatures have dropped precipitously.
A compiled list of all the sources can be seen here. The total amount of cooling ranges from 0.65C up to 0.75C -- a value large enough to wipe out nearly all the warming recorded over the past 100 years. All in one year's time. For all four sources, it's the single fastest temperature change ever recorded, either up or down.
Scientists quoted in a past DailyTech article link the cooling to reduced solar activity which they claim is a much larger driver of climate change than man-made greenhouse gases. The dramatic cooling seen in just 12 months time seems to bear that out. While the data doesn't itself disprove that carbon dioxide is acting to warm the planet, it does demonstrate clearly that more powerful factors are now cooling it.
Let's hope those factors stop fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70.
Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news.

In Bill Brysons book, A Short History of Nearly
Everything" there's talk of a theory that ices ages might not take
centuries to develop but could be bought on by as little as one cold
summer where snow didn't melt enough to go away completely, (snow is
one of the best reflectors of solar heat) the next winter more snow
builds up and more heat is reflected away and before you know it, we're
looking at 2 mile high glaciers and permafrost in my back yard.
