If the IRL and Champ Car were to become unified again what should it be called? I always thought the name Indy Racing League was a little cheesy myself, Champ Car World Series even sounded better. The IRL looks like they officially go by the name IRL IndyCar Series now. I always just liked IndyCar Series myself, maybe they ought to just drop the Indy Racing League moniker altogether to help smooth out some of the egos involved? Calling it the IndyCar World Series even combines the two? Or maybe they should just call it something different altogether? What should it be?

Man, open wheel must really be in sad shape. I don't even see this much disgust when someone tries to bring up nascar...lol.

The " NASCART Indy Car Series "

European Open Wheel Series
Adding $6 trillion of debt in his 1st term and now if
elected again he wouldn't have to worry about an
electorate in 2016 so the sky is the limit. And his EPA
would continue to put the screws to oil drilling and
mining for coal. Can you say bankruptcy.

I'll have a renewed interest in Indy when it becomes an American sport again. I couldn't care less who the "best" road racers are. When at least a third of the "Indy-whatever" championship points are paid in midgets, sprint cars, and dirt champs....CALL ME !
Until then....irrelevant.
Fenders ? We don't need no stinking fenders !!!

Open wheel racing is dying a modern day death. The Indy/IRL has probably passed the point of no return unless a whole different "car" is born. Even sprint cars are losing market to dirt late models although traditional sprints seem to be gaining momentum. I 'm seeing a growth in go kart activity, especially the more sophistacted shifters on pavement. They are about at the cost of sprint car racing in the sixties. Open wheel racing is getting too costly to prosper I'm afraid.

I attended the Champ Car Grand Prix of Long Beach a few years ago, mostly because I just happened to be in the neighborhood on raceday but also to satisfy my curiosity. It was o.k. but I probably wouldn't go back again unless someone had an extra ticket and invited me along. Pretty much the same story for an IRL race I went to at California Speedway. The only things that stand out about that event was the fact that the cars were louder than I'd anticipated and the fact that I saw one of the most beautiful women I've ever laid eyes on. She was working as an usher, showing people to their seats. I'd pay to see her before I'd pay to see the Indy Cars race again, (the only suspense generated by the race was wondering whether they'd go the distance before a weather system moved in). Pretty sad in light of the fact that I consider myself a motorsports enthusiast. Unless things change dramatically I think the IRL, Champ Car or any combination thereof is rapidly becoming a non issue for most people. I'm not sure if there's anything that can, or could have been done to avoid this. Times change, people change, tastes change. (Drifting for example, yeah, go figure). Formula One has also lost much of its luster and mystique. Nascar is currently riding the crest of a wave but I think that wave will level off soon and then slowly recede unless they can produce some new drivers who will continue to capture people's interest. The golden age of motorsports has come and gone. If anyone out there can convince me otherwise, believe me, I'd love to hear it!

NOW YOU'RE TALKIN' !!! I miss the supers in Phoenix at the "Copper World". ISC F---ed up that event when they replaced the Supers and the Southwest Tour with the Indycars and the Indy lites. After ten years of attending that event (and Manzy in the evenings ) I will NEVER go back.......

Yes sir!
I believe the roadsters would have evolved to a very close version of the pavement supers had the change not been made in the middle 60's. Nascar would still be in second place had things been like that.
See BRR? We don't disagree on everything.

It might have been pavement but the gathering of the clan was something I looked forward to all year long and the programs were the best, glad I saved them. Running over to Manzy for that show, well what weekends we had, makes me smile just to think about how lucky we were.

Nice cover! Billy Vukovich in the Vernon Rietz "Spirit of Madera" super, Bob Frey in the Glen Neibel V-6 sprinter, Rich Vogler in the midget, not sure who is in the stock car. Legendary names, in what used to be a legendary race.......We were lucky to witness it.............

t-dub, those are the 87 winners and Gary Collins won the stock cars and that's Robby flock in the Midget. Easy to get that one wrong. Richie won it in 88 and 89 then Stanley in 90, that was the start of a long list of wins for that Beast #9.
