Well it is a web page that takes money to run...so, I would say yes...yes, they prolly are getting some money to help pay for the site that you seem to use for free.
That is like being mad that you have to look at sponsors on the side of a wing. I would also have to say those drivers in those cars are prolly getting kick backs too...!

I hadn't really noticed them. I've gotten so used to ads all over the web pages I read that I seem to just tune them out. I realize that's not good news for the advertisers, but that's the way it is.

I would rather them be in the middle too as I just keep scrolling down the page, just as I do with some of these posters stupid replies.

I have no problem with the ads that are placed in the middle. I can choose to read them or just scoot on by. Now pop-ups are an entirely different matter.
