Sorry to bother all you wing guys but ASCS infected the hell out of Indiana Open Wheel so not sorry. It seems that IOW is all but cooked and I have no where else to spew my stupid opinions but I'm wondering if there is any actual sense on this site. I started watching sprint cars in 1979 at Knoxville and when they switched to wings in '82 I couldn't have disliked it any more. I watch them occasionally to this day only to be reaffirmed of my dislike. Thank God CRA came to my rescue in 1989 at Granite City and Knoxville as we had a terrible drought here in the late 80's for real sprint car racing. Some crazy Hawaiian named Bobby George got our attention in the Pivavaroff 43 car driving like an absolute maniac and bare handed, no gloves. You had to be there I guess. You just don't get that kind of thrill from winged cars. They're not on edge like that. Kinda like having to bag it up. The equivalent of a wing. In this day and age the crazy guy is Robert Ballou. His interviews are just about as nuts as he is on the track. He's had a broken neck and now a broken back so who knows how much longer he'll be out there. Another true hero is Just Grant. He's been racing lately with a shattered left foot suffered at Sprint Week in Lawrenceburg. Lawrenceburg Speedway is one of the most awesome tracks I've ever been to. Scary to even look at. Grant got hurt there, has had two surgeries and they custom made a boot for his foot to operate the brake pedal. He's won twice since. Nothing short of legendary. His most recent win made him the all time winningest USAC sprint car driver surpassing Dave Darland and formerly Tom Bigelow. Anyway, just letting people know there is still real sprint car racing happening in spite of Kyle Larson and his fear of racing without a wing. Glad to see the real sprint cars way outnumber NARC winged sprints at Calistoga. It was also amusing to see Spencer Bayston give up a real sprint car ride to Logan Seavey for $10,000 to win in a car wrenched by arguably the best crew chief in the businesses. Not sure how one can be a fan of a guy like that. In fact, there are several big money non-downforce races coming up in the next few weeks but there won't be a single wing guy there. It's not the money that matters to them like they say, it's the missing parts on their bodies.

It seems to me that you are too closed minded. I watch both, mostly winged but just went Kokomo for Smackdown. The fact is until enough people show up for the wingless races to pay higher purses wingless racing will continue to lose drivers.

We all have different opinions.  I watch both, but winged is by far my favorite.  I attend winged vs. non-winged 10:1, maybe more.  That's find if you don't.

I like both, but wingless (AKA "traditional" ) a bit better. Its sad that USAC pays less, they've lost several of their big names, & of them, only Sunshine is excelling with the wing.

Are you saying IOW website is officially dead now? (I'll check in a minute) A month or so ago, it started working really slow, so I lost patience & stopped using it.... frown

My Hoosier buddy, USAC faithful, points out that most of the Indiana tracks don't have as much seating capacity as the 1/2 miles...

But yea

So how did you like Smackdown? (I've been there twice, maybe 3 times? )

I just tried, couldn't get IOW to even open up (lost patience again!)

They should just start all over with a new website, had to be technical problems

There's definitely a need for those dedicated Hoosier fans to have their forum!

Smackdown was amazing but I'll bet almost nobody that posts here took the time to watch it. The Jackslash video of Justin Grant putting fire protection over his pirate leg and then WINNING is the shit legends are made of.

born and raised central PA winged sprint cars nut.  But Kokomo and Haubstadt are my two favorite tracks and been to both for speedweek.  I watched all 3 nights of smackdown and i will make it there for my first one live next year.

heck Cummins and KTJ are running a local chassis - Mark Smith's Mach 1.  Rock steady team (Hank) is about as nice a guy in the pits as you will ever want to meet!

if it is a sprint car i watch it and love it.....now interestingly enough i love watching the wings on the bigger tracks and prefer the non-wings on Kokomo, Haubstadt, Bloominton, Circle, and lincoln park.....

if it is high limit i watch it - if it is WoO i watch it....if it is usac sprint cars i watch it.  jeepers turf wars are stupid love sprint cars!!!!!  i can take or leave the midgets.....will watch a midget race if there are no sprint cars to watch.....

Chili Bowl opinion will not be popular but i can take it or leave it.  College wrestling in the winter over a midget race anyday....now come February i'm flipping back and forth from a match to 410's in florida.

My wife and I took the time to drive 550 miles one way to watch it. Good racing and atmosphere but you should not be able to just show up and get good seats as we did at a race like that. When We go west for races one thing we notice is not as many families attending as here in the central Pa.

Ever go to Indiana Midget Week? Its great... 410 wingless cars are the undercard

I agree about wingless (or midgets, for me) on bullrings, wingers on 1/2 miles

One of my most fun races was a few years ago, little Montpelier bullring, Larson & Chris Bell battling it out under a full moon. Dirt clods flying all the way to the top row of the wooden bleachers... Guy next to me was using his seat cushion like a shield, trying to block the dirt clods. When I stood up I realized the clods would only hit below your knees. Couldn't stop laughing Smile

No I have never been to Indiana Midget week - if the 410 wingless are there maybe I'll do it.

However, because of distance with living in central PA my priority list in Indiana will be the speed week and Kokomo in the foreseeable future.  I love everything about speedweek And Kokomo is the Bomb! Tri-city haubstadt is The Bomb part 1a!

thanks for sharing about Montpelier.
