I just watched the highlights of Port Royal's first major sprint car race of the season------The Keith Kauffman Classic. From what I could tell, it looked like a fantastic race. Many of the comments I read were very complimentary with one being "as always great racing, and the track prep was amazing!" I just thought I'd share as only someone completely out of touch with reality would disagree.

I am grateful that all that fuel laying on the track didn't ignite that everyone was standing in after that 1st lap crash.

I have Been to all of them. I would rank last night as 2nd or third best of the 4 so far. They were going fast though, that is important to some.

Last night was the best track they had all year. They had a top and bottom groove and it was fast at the beginning of the night. Thanks to the little rain and cloud cover all day.
Now a sunny day with a 3 division show. The track has to be that wet at the beginning of the night. Then it will be perfect for the features. Anything slower and you will not have a bottom groove. See the second and 3rd race of the year. They did have a bottom groove the first night but there was not anything up from about a car width off the bottom. You would go backwards if you went a car above the extreme bottom groove. That is horrible track conditions!

That sounds good but what I'm really wondering about is what were the lap times in hot laps? That is what determines if it's a good show right?

On a sunny, winding day with I think 3 oclock start that was the fourth best of the four. Satuday was not even close to the best of the four. Some full of sh!t guy was mentioned while we talked about that Saturday. If deitz had not had a flat & Stutts had not gotten by Macri for a few laps the would have been the third best race of the four for sure.

The reason for the better race track conditions is water/moisture!! It misted and drissled rain much of the day. 16 second lap times is much better racing than the 20-21 second feature lap times!!

Crazy. The all time record for 20 laps at Knoxville Raceway is 16.25----that's the all-time record. I have seen a lot of great features at Knoxville with them turning 20 second laps. In most instances, the 20 second laps lead to a much better race than the 16.25 second laps, so I'm not sure I see the connection the same way. Many of the Knoxville Nationals produce some fantastic finishes, but according to what you're saying, they are turning unacceptably high lap times?

Yes, they normally have it so dry most nights that the track is worn out by the time the features roll out. See the first 3 weeks.

That is for the feature....i am talking early in the night. The track record at Knoxville is held by Brian Brown at 14.351.
Just about everytime they race quick time is somewhere in the middle 15 second bracket.
The track will slow down though out the night. The 410s at Port for the feature should be between the high 16 to anywhere in the 17 second bracket for a great feature. The reason the crews and drivers hate when it is super fast at the beginning of the night they have to change their car alot more from when it is hard black and dry in the first heat race.

If you read the post I was replying to numbnuts, you would see I was responding to FEATURE times.
Also curious as to why someone would refer to Port Royal racing with "as always great racing........" They, along with everyone else I've ever spoken to in person, must not have the same insight as you.

Does anyone have the average starting position of feature winners at Port this year?

Remember an accident did happen at the front of the field opening day. Took out a lot of up front starters.
Opening day Dietrich original starting spot was 11, his actual starting spot was 8th, he had everyone passed except Borden on the first lap before anyone knew what hit them and bofore thry got there cars wound out. Borden started 12th, Cisney started 2nd, and Macri started 4th.

Maybe good racing isn't all about track prep as you say, I think Lincoln's average starting position is 1.2 in 5 races!!!
