If I recall correctly, it's something to do with Sponge Bob. I'm way too old to know anything about that cartoon so it makes no sense to me... when I was younger I had a friend with a similar nickname but that was about Bloody Mary's and tobasco :-)

Maybe an announcer trying to be cute? I think the announcers would like all the drivers to have nicknames. My 91 year old mom tells me everyone had a nick name in her town when she was young. Same thing for my father he said.

I seem to remember him saying once that he had didn't know what the connection was to his nickname.

It sounds to me like something that his brother would dream up. I remember the first time I heard the nickname was when Dominic was in the booth with Johnny at a race a few years back.

His dad actually named him that because of a Sponge Bob cartoon.

Thanks everyone, my personal opinion is there are too many nicknames in dirt track racing. I alway thought the crowd pleaser was a horrible nickname. I like Craig D. but if anyone was a crowd pleaser it was the wild child.

Agreed, they badly overdo it with the nicknames.

Earl Hoon Jr., from Port Royal dreamed up some "real bad" ones the last few years.

Heard a DLM driver called "the flying squirrel", WOW, why would any racer at any level want a nickname like that!?!?

There's a mod driver from NY that has that nickname I'm guessing because his first name is Rocky.

The best ones can be kind of fun. From the early 70's at Black Hills Speedway in western S.D.: Concrete John Slagle. From announcer Jim Shaw " John's knocked out his front axle so often that the crew put a zipper on it to make replacement easier.

Yeah I agree some are cool but some of these announcers think everybody needs one it's like their auditioning for Sports center.

I was nicknamed the Mule through a Utah basketball pick and roll.
When my point guard actually passed me the ball, i was going for it!

I hadn't heard that one, but yeah that one sucks. Most of them are idiotic, and maybe a couple of them even make sense. I can see where Austin McCarl is a big unit, but Brad Sweet ain't a big anything...

The track & streaming announcers are all looking to be cute or unique. Hoping to move up to broadcast events perhaps? Most of them talk way to fast and to much. Trying to generate excitement by them talking or yelling does not cut it. It is not radio, we can see the races either in person or streaming. Some need their eyesight checked as they cannot judge distance between racer cars..
Thankfully we have noise at the tracks to drown them out and the mute button at home.
