Very well said but unfortunately a vast majority of people do not understand or look at it like this.
|
You're right because a lot of people just want what they want and/or they like Kyle Larson or hate the Outlaws so instead of looking at things objectively with their biases aside and try to understand it from a different perspective, they just swallow whatever their "side" feeds them. That's pretty much the way society works really. But regardless, people who worship Larson and hate the Outlaws absolutely refuse to look at it from the perspective of someone trying to protect their brand. Business is a tough sport in and of itself. If you concede something to someone, you almost NEVER get it back and if you leave the door open a little, someone is gonna kick it right in. I understand the hardships of running a series like that and being hampered by a stretch of cancelations or something. I really do. But long term, the World of Outlaws need to protect their product and they need to be fairly strict about it. You absolutely can't have tracks scheduling unsanctioned events and ending up with your drivers there the day before a WoO event. Most of the time, it will affect attendance at your event. That's just a fact. And you can't have 32 regulars start the year then by September have 3 teams left because everyone who's out of the points battle drops off the tour. You'd think more teams would be understanding of this as well but sadly, like fans and society as a whole, they want what they want and expect to get it no matter how it affects someone else. They want higher purses and I can promise you, Brad or Kyle don't give a damn where it comes from and a lot of others don't either. Just like they say in Goodfellas: "F_ _ K you. Pay me."

I was just looking at the High Limit schedule and their closest race is 34 Raceway, 399 freeway or 363 miles by two lane. Without counting every WoO date there are at least a dozen WoO races including the Nationals that are closer. Aside from some TV time this new deal isn't a factor where I live. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to watch. I'm at an age where staying above ground becomes a bigger deal than the series name on the advertising banners at the race tracks. Nothing to get bent out of shape over as it's going to be what will be. It's uncharted territory and past experience would suggest that it's going to come down to WoO name recognition and promoter loyalty.

After all is said and done I do give merit to WRG. They have outlasted everyone. Will the Sweet/Larson deal having the recognition the woo has ? I highly doubt it. The racers have complained about one thing over the years, and that has been travel. People complain that a platinum member cannot race outside of woo. We all know that is not the case but yet almost no one uses there allotted freebies I'm going to call them. I'm going to go back to the travel aspect of this deal, by the end of the year these guys on the road are worn out. Equipment is in need of refreshing, from the toter to the nuts and bolts cabinet. Pa and ohio speedweeks takes a toll on every guy that is not a regular follower of the all stars. Everyone sees these rigs that come rolling thru the pit gate but few have any idea what it takes in man hours to keep it rolling along. Is the money high limit offering nice ? It sure is, but what your seeing is the guys that need time to keep there minds, bodies and equipment ready to go. Drivers today are bag drivers, the race is over and there outta there. Racing 3, 4 nights in a row is exhausting for everyone on a team.

Davenport is 351 miles so it's the same thing. I am not very demanding when it comes to Sprint Car races. Ideally it would be a three block walk like it was when I was a kid living near our State Fair half mile or North Starr was still open ten miles down the freeway and the Outlaws were still coming that close a couple times a year. High Limit will be a TV series for me.'

I am not far from there, but I know late model guys that have raced there. Is this the first time 410's have been on this track? Just curious

Can't say for sure but I can't recall them being there! I am about 25-30 minutes away but have not been there for years! It was a 1/2 mile the last time I was there but now they have down sized it to a 3/8 I believe. (maybe even smaller??
All that I can remember being there was the 360 Sprint Invaders.

Would Kraig Kinser be a good fit for High Limit? Middle of the pack car in Woo. Possibly a chance to be more competitive here. Just a thought.

The Outlaws used to race on the big half-mile there. I remember seeing a pic in Open Wheel of Dollansky wrapping the Jensen Construction 55 into the catch fencing, which would've been around '95. I was there in '96 or '97 when Stevie Smith (in the Motter 71m) beat the King in a photo finish. I don't recall the racing being the greatest most of that night... but the finish was pretty exciting. I think they've mostly (or completely) given up on racing on the half-mile these days, as the bigger late model/midget shows have been on the semi-banked quarter-mile cut into the infield of the half. Based on that, I would assume that HL will race on the quarter as well. Based on how car counts shake out, etc, I may try to go...

I don't understand why any team is making an announcement of committing to anything that doesn't require commitment.
Daily non special purses are pretty similar. For those who don't have a legit chance against the WoO can race for WoO sized purses against car more equal to their own. This has to be good for many.
There must be some loyalty from guys like Bill Rose to the WoO. The WoO must have treated him well for many years or why wouldn't he step away from that series for similar prize money against less successful teams? Perks might be that reason.
I don't think it would take much for a track to offer huge money the night of a HL race and successfully draw many away from the HL.
Why wouldn't the HL keep the recognizable name of the Ascoc and take it nationally. That name has value but they stick with HL??? Head scratcher. Arrogance?? Dunno.
I predict a short lived series simply because when the WoO come to town I know a dozen good cars will arrive.
Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Remember when Brad Sweet said High Limit wasn't looking to compete with Outlaws?
Remember the details that he was at Outlaw races last year trying to persuade drivers (And I presume officials) to go to High Limit full time?
