If you wanted to build a race track for both the fans comfort and the drivers and crews what is your plan.  This assumes you have all the permits and legal work done.  First I would make sure it was 2-3 miles away from town with little chance of  houses being built near track.  It would be 3/8 mile on the low side of track with 7-8 degree banking.  I will add things  later after others write what they would like.

Do you award bonus points for thinking way outside the box? Imagine a track shaped like an equallater triangle, like the rack on a pool table.

The track would have 3 straitaways  and 6 corners. The straights would be sized for a quarter mile track. The pairs of corners would turn a car 120 degrees instead of the current 180. The track would be wide and all three sets of corners would have different banking. The fence would be a ways out from the racing surface. It's job is to keep cars out of the stands, not destroy cars that tangled or went to wide. The track would be 3/8 mile with probably faster lap times than an oval. I feel there would be a lot of action on the track. Pits would be outside the track so you could se the action.

You just described the former configuration of the Mississippi Thunder speedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin.  It used to be a trioval and I heard a lot of stories about what it was like to have cars approaching the turn in front of the grandstand.  If you look on the historic airial photos and go back car enough you might find a photo of it.  They reconfigured to an oval and host a WoO Late Model race there. I have been to 40 tracks and many that no longer exist but never got to see a race there but heard a lot about it.

IMO Bridgeport built a near perfect race track a couple years ago.

I was only there once and it was 5 years ago, but I'd have to say Lucas Oil Speedway in Missouri is about to close as an ideal facility as anywhere.

Good looking trophy girls would be a must. Spectator talent shows on the front stretch during intermissions.

Agree totally with bridgeport, that place has become a racey place. One of the finest tracks I have been to with southern red clay and a great layout is screven in GA. The rest of the place unfortunately is a dump, but the racing is really really good.

I would build a replica of I-55 as far as the track goes.  Rural area--- 5 miles minimum from the nearest town.  I would give everyone within a 5 mile radius free lifetime passes to the track as a "peace offering."  I would have multiple, large restrooms---double the size of what other tracks offered.  It doesn't have to be anything fancy.  Pole sheds with large troughs for the men would suffice.  Concessions would be streamlined for maximum convenience and sales---some tracks (and professional sports venues for that matter) have this down, and some are an absolute trainwreck.   I could also consider a food truck area for a rental fee or portions of the sales.

Once I get all of this in place, of course I would have to find a way to lure Strawser from his current employer.   I would pay him top dollar to promote and prep the track.  He would be in charge of all ticket pricing and purses.  We would have huge bonuses for all drivers since motors are expensive.  No streaming is allowed because I don't want fans from 500 miles away paying to enjoy our show.  Also, tickets will be $5 because I don't want to be greedy and try to make a profit.  If a regular from our track decides to race another track on our off-night, we will also pay that driver for his results at that track-------as a way to help promote sprint car racing all over---not just our track.  I think it would be selfish of me to think about my business when I could use my sales to benefit other businesses rather than feed my family.

Sorry, my first paragraph was serious and then the paint fumes got to me..........................

Luck?  Who need luck with Strawser in your corner?

Sorry---I couldn't help myself.  Back to the topic at hand and not highjacking the thread----I like the layout of I-55's track and would love to see a great concessions and vastly increased restrooms when compared to many facilities.  I think a lot of money is lost by tracks on a nightly basis because of the ridiculously long, slow moving lines at concessions.  How about scrap the concessions altogether?  Have a food truck "court" and schedule a number of independent vendors to line the back of the grand stands?   Turn beer sales over to various non-profit organizations and rent them the beer stand(s).

If a food truck can be efficient in delivery times apply that process to your own food concessions and keep the money.  The only food truck I've been to that was fast was only offering one item.

I guess I'm thinking more about the employment crisis and my experiences watching the efficiency of concessions at professional sporting events.  Holy CRAP!  I could literally go behind the counter and serve all 4 lines faster by myself!!!  wink

The worst is the United Center in Chicago.  I've never seen concession lines more poorly run.  Terrible.  One register will literally serve 6 people during the 18 minute intermission of an NHL game---at a time when they don't accept cash so making change is not an issue.  It is absolutely ridiculous.   I know some tracks count on weekend warriors and sometimes even volunteers-----I get it.  However, the little concession stand at our high school football games is filled with high school kids and volunteers and they serve double or triple the costumers in the same time frame as some of the professional sports venues.

So, to get rid of the HUGE headache of managing people (been there, done that) and alleviate the urge to fire everyone and do it myself, I would at least entertain the idea of renting out spaces for food trucks.  Also, I don't know if they still do it, but at one point Beaver Dam WI rented out a booth to the local Taco Bell.  Another great idea.  ??

Anything that reduces hiring in this work culture would be a positive.

Knoxville has real good concession stand and employees.  They seem to be happy to wait on you.

I would put in covered grandstand like in the old days.  I guess my money is running out.
