On the issue of ...
Is it just me or have accidents with detachable fuel tanks that catch on fire beome a normal thing ? ..From skinny frames to skinny fuel tank brackets... hard to keep up.....If everyone is ok with this then I'm fine and I'll add it to my excitment guage... But if it is an issue that needs fixed lets don't wait to long....
Flo racing found a great way to breakup the boredom of a 10 lap heat race by inserting a Ford Truck Commercial over 3 of the 10 laps... Great idea... Wonder if NASCAR will try that.. They did not interrupt the Google search reading of "10 bucks for a shout out from Blake" that filled the remainder of the time period..
Dirt Vision being the industry leader that we have come to count on is providing us with a media player with no fast forward/reverse option to reduce weight and make it faster. Note, if you sign up for the 6 year subscription plan you can add one..
Sometimes a REDO is necessary... Lets go back to Lincoln Speedway on saturday... Cory Eliason exits his car in victory lane happy as can be and looks at the dog and the girl and this time kisses the girl first, dog second... I'm just sayin....

Haha this post has me chucking a little bit. I think I'm picking up the sarcasm in each statement and if so agree on all points. Kisses the dog before the girl... come on folks. To each their own but come on.

WOO looked at tail tank mounts about 3 years ago but did nothing. There is a bar on frame just in front of tank that would be a ideal place to attach another place on tank. No one will do it unless WOO requirs it as it would add 6 oz weight to car.

Fuel tank problems are magnified if it happens at the beginning of the feature. 30 gallons times 7 lbs per gallon equals around 210 pounds sloshing around at a high speed in a tank that already weighs 60 lbs. Not saying it doesn't happen earlier in the night sometimes just pointing out a fact. Yet Brad Doty and other so-called experts want to make the tanks bigger yet. (Insert eye roll here). It is indeed an issue and hope someone looks at it eventually. The mounting system is the weak point right now.

Most guys want the tail tank to seperate from the car. The worst is backing a tank into something, the tank ruptures and you have real problems.

Yep.... Zeb Wise is rather thankful his car spun like a top spraying all the fuel away from the car vs pooling under it.

Are these recent fires the result of the tank completely rupturing or fittings and lines being torn off as the tank leaves? That Zeb Wise fire looked like he just backed into the wall and the tank exploded. I though that bladders inside the tank was supposed to deform and not just flat rupture. Same with the McMahon wreck at the Nationals. Did the tank just bust open? Seems like the tanks aren't as safe as they should be.

An empty tail tank complete with bladder may weigh about 25 lbs. I feel that if the crash was hard enough to rip the tank off is overall better for the driver.

What if the detached fuel tank flies into the stands or hits a driver in their car? Not arguing just asking....

The stands would be terrible but somewhat minimized at most tracks because few have stands in the corners , but still could happen anywhere.
Pretty unlikely a splash would hit the driver considering they are in momentum down track.
Either way I realize there is brutal possiblilites
Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Can someone please explain exactly what a fuel cell is?
A tank with a bladder inside? I thought maybe it had some kind of sponge like thing....
Fires used to be a lot more common....safety & progress are GOOD THINGS!

It's a plastic shell with a bladder inside. The fittings go through holes in the shell. The shell is as thin and lightweight as they can get away with. The bladder is supposed to be rupture proof, but they rupture. The fittings are typical fittings, so they break and tear free from the bladder, etc. I bet a typical 25 gallon outlaw fuel cell before mounting doesn't weigh more that about 12 pounds.

Certainly would be a tragedy & hopefully it never happens.
They could strap these tanks to the cars & use the 4 bolt system I feel, but obviously they must not feel it as a problem.
There is always a chance for something that never happened before at any race anywhere!!
My concerns are the fact that it ruptered, although being the perfect impact, but something had to slice it.

fires have gotten more common since mandated fuel cell mounts-the tanks are mounted so solidly that it now tears holes in the tank instead of the tank just falling off-every time you "fix" a problem, you create new ones.
