Amarillo, TX

Route 66 Motor Speedway

Danny Wood takes Lyndon Moss Memorial $15,000 Championship

Mother Nature delayed the race from the original scheduled Saturday night event to a rare Sunday afternoon 1:00pm show. The hot weather which reached into the mid-90s didn’t deter the estimated crowd of 3,500.

Jett Hays set a torrid pace to start the feature. However, the wily veteran Wood known as the “Flying Fossil” found speed on the outside of turn two on a restart and powered to the lead. Wood survived a gallant effort on the last lap as Hays pulled even coming out of turn 4. But Wood had the preferred line and Hays was loose and couldn’t find the needed speed coming out of four as Wood took the win by three car lengths. John Carney II challenged Hays for the runner up spot, and came up a wheel length back. Wood took home $15,000 for the win. The largest 305 Sprint car payday in the country.

Danny had a huge shout out to his dash draw buddy Gracie for putting him on the front row.

Winners of the FloRacing Heat races were Kolby Walters, Jett Hays, Kyle McCutcheon, and Danny Wood.

Transferring through the B-Main were Joe Lee, Michelle Parson, Bryson Oeschger and D.J. Estes.

Brett Becker of Odessa, TX claimed the KSE Racing Fast Time Award

Jett Hays and Wood claimed the Dash wins and Hays claimed the AFCO Racing Das Award with the fastest Dash race time.

Chase Parson of Abilene, TX won the Best Appearing Car Award.

Chris Douglas claimed his second consecutive Joey Saldana Kids Kool Helmet Award

D. J. Estes claimed the Making the Cut Award Award he also claimed the Hard Charger Award advancing 10 positions.

The Kids Lyndon Moss Memorial Sack Races were awesome with champion in 3 age groups 4-6, 7-9, 10-12.

38 drivers from 4 states competed in a one of a kind 305 event. Cars were allowed wing sliders, and a reduced weight. The event followed the ASCoC racing format with Time Trials, Heats, 2 Dashes, a Last Chance Showdown race, and a 24 car field competing for over $33,000 in prize money and $6,000 in contingency awards.

Thanks Texdel,

A great win for Danny.  The emotions from him in winners circle is a must see.  I've known Danny for over 30 years and never saw him as excited and humble as he was, winning this race.  If you or someone would either post the A feature, including the interview with Danny or post a source to go to view this, Please do so.

$15,000 to win a 305 race? Wow! Great that the Flyin' Fossil is still racing and winning.

Yeah but 2nd only paid $2,000....but I guess still not bad for 305's. Also, was a pretty decent "day" race. I didn't know anything about the event, just found it on FLO on a Sunday afternoon, it was not bad.

Always nice to hear of an older racer picking up a big win. I could be wrong but it may have been the biggest payday in his racing career. It is interesting that some feeder classes have large paying shows, I've seen micros race for 5-10 grand also.
